Tonya Kappes - A Charming Wish Interview & Giveaway

A Charming Wish: A Magical Cures Series By Tonya Kappes

Bubble, Bubble. . .
It seems shop owner and newly appointed Whispering Falls Village President June Heal has it all: beauty, wits, bewitching powers...Sheriff Oscar Park. Life is good. Because life in Whispering Falls is magical.

Cures and Trouble. . .
But when a member of the community is found dead on the steps of A Charming Cure, June's homeopathic cure shop, and her fingerprints show up at the scenes of local robberies, she is kicked off the village council and her powers fall under scrutiny. Until it's uncovered who is wreaking havoc on the town...June's magic is suspended.

Magic Stirs. . .
With the help of a rather obnoxious genie and Mr. Prince Charming, June's Fairy-God cat, June is determined to figure out who is framing her. Time is of the essence when it becomes clear that the true villain is trying to get rid of her...permanently!

And Trouble Doubles. . .
Oscar Park will do anything to protect June even if that means giving up all of his magical powers. . .or worse, his life.

Hi, Tonya. Thank you for joining me today. Tell me about the Magical Cures Mystery Series come from and how many books do you plan to have in the series?

I absolutely love this series! The series is a made up world of magical/psychic stuff….I’ve never written anything where I completely make up the entire world and words with in that world. It was a ton of fun! The series follow June Heal on her journey from being a commoner to finding a community with magical powers and realize she is one of them. It's a fun journey with talking crystal balls, animals, genies and lots of fun potion making. Think I Dream of Jeannie crosses Bewitched.

There are six books planned in the series. But there could be more. (winks)

Your latest book, A Charming Wish came out a couple of weeks ago, please tell me about it?

The magic continues in A Charming Wish, the third novel in the Magical Cures Series. June has been elected the new Village President when Isadora Solstice retires, giving June new magical powers than just her intuition. Unfortunately there is a murder on the steps of A Charming Cure, June’s homeopathic cure shop, and June is left holding the bag of evidence that points to her.

She has to rely on Madame Torres, her snarky crystal ball, Mr. Prince Charming, her fairy-god cat, and Belur, a genie, to help figure out who is creating havoc in the magical town of Whispering Falls.
Are the books in the Magical Cures Mystery Series standalones or do they need to be read in order?

You can read the novels as standalones, but you really miss the flavor of the small town and all the characters if you don’t. A Charming Potion is a short story that is between novel one and novel two that is not a standalone and includes spoilers.

I’m mainly a romance girl who dabbles in other genres, so I have to ask about Sheriff Oscar Park. What can readers expect from the hot Sheriff Park and June?

Awww…Oscar is also a witch, but will do anything for June. He is put in a very compromising position when June is investigated for murder since he is the one and only sheriff. Remember. . .he will do anything for June.

Was there a character or scene in this book which you enjoyed writing the most? If so, why?

I really do love Madame Torres. She has that little bit of sass and spunk that I’d love to have. She will say anything to anyone at anytime.

How do you come up with the names of your characters? (Petunia, Madame Torres, Mr. Prince Charming, etc.)

GREAT question. No one has ever asked me that. I took into consideration each characters magical powers. June Heal is a homeopathic shop owner who helps “heal” what is really going on by creating personalized potions for her clients. Isadora Solstice owns Mystic Lights, where she has crystal balls and all types of lights. Petunia Shrubwood owns Golly Bee Pet Shop and she speaks to animals. See the pattern?

Your books are full of twists and turns. Do you plot things out or do you just let the characters involved lead you?

I wish I could say that I plot them out because it would probably be easier. I start with a town, mostly small towns, and come up with the shops I would like to visit in a small town. I come up with the murder details. I create at least one quirky character that everyone will like. By the time I lay all of that out, characters start coming out of the woodwork.

Each one of my series has their own address book. I start to plug in their information as I go. THEN I’m ready to sit down and write. Usually the first 100 pages come out pretty quick and I can see where the characters are taking me. Once I reach that point, I do plot out the rest of the novel.

Are you a full-time writer or do you have a day job? If you are a full time writer, what did you do in your previous life?

I do have a day job. I’m a child therapist and work for myself. I only keep ten clients cases. This was my full time job, but has become very part time, two days a week. I write every single day, no excuses. I’d say writing is now full time.

Are you currently working on anything else? What can we look forward to seeing next from you?

I’m always working on something else. My new series is set in a small town (go figure) about a young woman who is an undertaker. Guess what . . .she sees ghosts that have been murdered. It has been so much fun to write because my quirky character is the ghost and so much fun.
