Justice isn’t always black or white. Sometimes it’s cold and dark.

Former CIA assassin Alex Parker works for The Gateway Project, a clandestine government organization hell-bent on taking out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. Alex doesn’t enjoy killing, but he’s damn good at it. He’s good at dodging the law, too—until a beautiful rookie agent has him wondering what it might be like to get caught.

FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney has spent years hunting the lowlife who abducted her identical twin sister eighteen years ago. Now, during an on-going serial killer investigation, Mallory begins to suspect there’s a vigilante operating outside the law. She has no choice but to take him down, because murder isn’t justice. Is it?

When Mallory starts asking questions, The Gateway Project management starts to sweat, and orders Alex to watch her. As soon as they meet, the two begin to fall in love. But the lies and betrayals that define Alex’s life threaten to destroy them both—especially when the man who stole her sister all those years ago makes Mallory his next target, and Alex must reveal his true identity to save the woman he loves.

REVIEW
A Cold Dark Place is the first book in the Cold Justice Series and I will definitely be reading the next book.  Toni Anderson has created a romantic suspense that was not by any means predictable.  It had an excellent premise and I was pleasantly surprised about how everything came together.  Although the subject matter was dark and twisted at times, the characters were very likable and I was very interested in knowing how they would handle all of the adversity thrown their way.

A Cold Dark Place focuses on FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney and government-sanctioned assassin Alex Parker.  Mallory’s twin sister was abducted from her bed 18 years ago when they were 9 years-old.  Since then Mallory has dedicated all of her extra time trying to find her.  While part of a team searching for a serial killer, Mallory unknowingly crosses paths with Alex Parker.  Alex works for a clandestine organization that administers justice by murdering the scum of the earth instead of allowing them to go to trial.  Alex eventually takes a special interest in Mallory so he secretly passes on information to her which may lead to closure regarding her sister.  Unfortunately, Mallory gets tasked with trying to find the person who murdered their latest serial killer and that person is Alex.  Since Alex is also a high level security consultant, he is able to immerse himself into the investigation and keep an eye on Mallory’s findings while keeping her safe from another serial killer.  Confused yet?

A Cold Dark Place has a lot of twists and turns.  All of the alphabet agencies are involved in some way or another.  The largest plotline has to do with the not so cold case regarding Mallory’s sister.  That person is still an active serial killer and rapist.  He has Mallory in his sights and Alex will stop at nothing to keep her safe.  Of course, Mallory and Alex develop an explosive relationship that starts a fire in the bedroom.  The direction that their relationship takes is not at all predictable and neither is the investigation into the serial killer.  I was guessing until the very end.
