After running at least two yellowish-red lights, he finally spotted December’s Jeep pulled onto the shoulder of the road. He parked on the other side of the street and jogged over to her window. Her arms were slouched over the wheel, her face hidden under her hair. When he knocked on the glass she jumped. Damn it, she looked like hell, so freaking pale and her big eyes rimmed with red.
Her shoulder lifted as she rolled down the window. The movement was awkward as if she were in some sort of physical pain. He’d fucking murder Austin if he’d laid a hand on her.
Her face contorted for a moment before she gained control. Then he saw her hand, a bandage enveloping a finger. “What the fuck happened?”
“He broke a mirror and I cut myself cleaning it up.”
Someone was going to die. Smothering a growl, he calmly gave her instructions. “I’m going to go get your things. I want you to stay here until I come back. Then we’ll take my truck to my place and come get your Jeep later. Don’t open the door for anyone. Do you understand?”
She nodded, and he leaned in and kissed her forehead. “Put the heat on. It’s cold.”
He returned to his truck and drove to Austin’s. The door was unlocked so he didn’t bother knocking. “Austin!”
The punch came out of nowhere, knocking Cord into the wall. It got his attention, but Austin was too drunk to aim properly. Finding his bearings, Cord turned and showed him how a proper punch should be administered, relishing the opportunity.
