I adore fairy tale stories and I especially love reading fairy tale retellings. When I set out to write the Ever After Series I had three goals. The series would be set in modern times, no magic, no fantasy, just simple love stories with real people. The second goal was to make the fairy tale aspects very subtle. I wanted the readers not to focus on which fairy tale they were reading and just to embrace the sweet happy ever after story lines as they come about. This series will focus on wealthy heroes and generally hardworking heroines of varying incomes. The heroines are all realistic and experience a lot of “firsts” in their lives such as first loves, first jobs, which tends to make this series fit well with readers who enjoy New Adults stories without dark romance premises.
My third goal and most important goal was to take a story and provide a sexy romance but not use an Alpha jerk style hero. I love a good alpha male jerk as much as the next reader, but lately it seems overdone. I wanted to show readers that even good gentleman guys could still be sexy as heck and just as much an Alpha hero while still treating the heroine with love and tenderness. When Jared and Felicity came into my mind, I knew right away they were the couple destined to be the first book in this series because Jared was a great guy, rich yes, a great job yes, but when you get right down to it, he’s a sexy, sweet, man who will do anything for his woman.
One of the best and little known facts about the Ever After Series is probably how the opening scenes for Legally Charming came to be. When I was in law school with my best friend Amanda, she and I hosted this big Halloween costume bash as a relaxing way to escape the pressures of law school. I dressed up as Anne Boleyn and she dressed up as Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas. We threw the party in Amanda’s boyfriend’s house, a sprawling beautiful home in Toronto. I was going to spend the night and ended up taking Amanda’s boyfriend’s brother’s room for the night. He was away at college but it was very strange to sleep in a strange man’s bed. And as I stripped out of the queenly Tudor gown that had made me feel like a princess, I wondered what it would have been like for a heroine in a romance novel in the same position as me, but for her, the bed’s owner would come back early to find her… a princess asleep in his bed. A princess he couldn’t help but wake with a kiss… And that is where the inspiration for Felicity and Jared was born!
