Gray’s Promise is the second book in Anni Fife’s King Security Series. There are several characters from the first book, Luke’s Redemption, but this can easily be read as a stand alone. When I say that this book is nothing like the first one, that would be an understatement. Gray’s Promise was much more brutal both physically and emotionally. It is clearly a romance but there is a lot of mystery and suspense in regards to a murder that happened during the heroine’s, Zoey Morgan, birthday party.
Zoey Morgan and Grayson “Gray” Walker were childhood friends that eventually became lovers. They were sure to marry until everything changed on the night of the birthday party. Zoey ended up in the hospital while her family members had been brutally attacked and murdered. To make things worse, Zoey had an engagement ring on her finger that didn’t belong to Gray. Zoey blocked out the memory of that night and Gray left town to join the military. Fast forward 14 years, Zoey is a pediatric surgeon still haunted by the fragmented memories of her past. Gray is now a security expert with King Security and has made an attempt to move on with his life. After consulting with her psychiatrist, Zoey decides that she needs to finally face the demons from her past head on. In order to do that, she needs her protector who she pushed away, Grayson Walker. Gray is very reluctant to help her but he has never stopped loving her so he agrees to travel back home to Denton, Texas with Zoey and deal with everything.
Gray has his own demons. They come in the form of his mother and brother. Their family is far past dysfunctional. There are family secrets that pre-date Gray’s birth. The drama plays out like a Greek tragedy. I will leave some of the details for you to figure out for yourself. I’ll just say that I couldn’t put Gray’s Promise down. The only thing about this book that I expected was the steamy sex scenes. Everything else was a surprise. The mystery plays out until the end. I enjoyed seeing members of King Security come in to help. It showed how much of a family they are. I look forward to the next book although now I have no idea where it will go.
