Review ~ MAKING IT LAST by Ruthie Knox

A hotel bar. A sexy stranger. A night of passion. There’s a part of Amber Mazzara that wants those things, wants to have a moment—just one—when life isn’t a complicated tangle of house and husband and kids and careers. Then, after a long, exhausting “vacation” with her family, her husband surprises her with a gift: a few days on the beach . . . alone.

Only she won’t be alone for long, because a handsome man just bought her a drink. He’s cool, he’s confident, and he wants to take Amber to bed and keep her there for days. Lucky for them both, he’s her husband. He’s got only a few days in Jamaica to make her wildest desires come true, but if he can pull it off, there’s reason to believe that this fantasy can last a lifetime.

REVIEW

Making It Last is a story I think EVERY married woman can relate to.  It’s what I like to call a “REAL marriage” romance book.  Ruthie gives the reader a glimpse into the lives of Amber and Tony Mazzara (from How to Misbehave), thirteen years after they’ve met.  Those thirteen years include being married for ten years and having three very rambunctious boys.

This is a story which will bring you to tears, if not just make you cry outright.  It shows Amber losing herself to the life of being a stay at home wife and mother.  It shows the struggles the Mazzaras endure with a bad economy and trying to stay afloat.  This story shows what happens when a couple drifts apart through no fault of their own, but life itself.  It’s a completely real story.

Through a role playing game the two are able to get some spice back into their lives.  But it’s through the real conversation they FINALLY have with each other that they are able to turn the corner and know that they truly have what it takes to make a marriage last.

I’m going to go out on the ledge here and say that this book isn’t for the faint at heart.  If you’re looking for a book that’s going to make you think that everything is magical and everything is right in the world....This isn’t the book for you.  But if you’re looking for a book that is going to show you what marriage is really all about, the love and struggles, this is your book.  This is the book that will allow you to believe in TRUE love.  Tony and Amber through all the ups and downs, never once stopped loving each other.  Good or bad, for better or for worse, they took their wedding vows seriously and make an agreement and plan that no matter what happens in the world, in their lives, with their family that it’s each other.  No matter what happens, they will ALWAYS choose each other.

I know that Ruthie probably has taken a lot of heat from some people because she wrote this book.  But I’m very happy that she had the courage and conviction to write this and show what true love really is.
