His Lover to Protect (Out of Uniform, #3)

Series: Out of Uniform
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: September 7, 2015

He's never met a challenge he couldn't take...

Alexis Yeung did everything right....only to watch everything go horribly, horribly wrong. Broken and angry, Alexis high-tails it to Europe, determined to face the world on her own terms and without consequence. Which includes a mind-blowing night with a sexy, scarred stranger.

Except, embittered former pararescuer Luke Jackson isn't exactly a stranger. He's supposed to keep an eye on Alexis without her knowing. Ending up in bed together was definitely not the plan. Now he's chasing her (admittedly hot) ass across Europe, a game of cat and mouse that always ends with the two of them tangled up in the sheets.

Something in their scarred, damaged souls calls to each other. And God help them, the sex in unbelievably hot. But if Alexis discovers who Luke really is, he'll lose the one thing that makes him feel whole...

REVIEW
His Lover to Protect, the third book in Katee Robert’s Out of Uniform series, is a standalone read.  However, readers of the series have been waiting for Alexis Yeung’s story to be told.  After losing everything she ever wanted, her ability to have children, her fiance, and the respect of her grandparents, Alexis is broken.  Watching her sister Avery have everything Alexis has wanted is too much to bare.  In a spur of the moment decision, she packs up and heads to Europe for parts unknown.

Alexis and Avery are close.  So when Alexis ups and leaves and purposely leaves her cell phone behind, Avery freaks.  Not only is Avery freaking out, so is Drew (her fiance and best friend) and his brother Ryan.  Since no one can travel to Europe to watch over Alexis, Ryan enlists the help of a retired pararescuer friend, Luke Jackson.  Luke is also a broken man, having lost his identity and all he’s ever wanted to do and be when an IED destroyed his knee and future with the Air Force.  Ryan’s mission is to keep eyes on Alexis to make sure she stays safe, but not to engage.  But Alexis isn’t as helpless and weak as everyone seems to think she is.

Alexis and Ryan’s relationship is cantankerous to say the least.  When they aren’t busy losing their clothes, they’re arguing.  But what’s interesting about this couple is that their back and forth, push and pull really helps them both to overcome the demons within themselves.

What was supposed to be a night of Alexis scratching a much needed itch turns out to be so much more.  Luke may not be a PJ any longer, but he still holds the conviction of his former job.  The USAF Pararescue mission states, “PJs will do whatever required to deny the enemy a victory and bring our warriors home to fight another day.” He does just that for Alexis.

Of course, since the part of Luke’s mission to not engage Alexis is shot, he has to walk a fine line so she doesn’t discover who he truly is.  It’s going to take Juliet of Romeo and Juliet lore to truly bring these two together.

His Lover to Protect isn’t anywhere close to being my favorite book of the series but Katee does give readers a solid story with characters you can become invested in.  The story is definitely emotion-based with Alexis and Ryan each needing to heal as a result of their past.
