Kate

I'm the last mermaid.

I’m back on shores of Lake Erie, but the cold waters are silent. There is nothing here for me but ghosts and the beach glass that litters the rocky shore. Long ago, I lived below the waves. Now, I am the sole survivor, and at long last, my mermaid glamour is leaving me.

Every day, I walk the beach. Every day, I wonder what happened to my people. The little pieces of colored glass that wash ashore give me simple pleasure. They are gifts from the lake, reminders of home. I fashion them into trinkets: necklaces, earrings, bracelets. They are beautiful things. The humans seem love them.

Every day, I walk the beach. Nothing ever changes, until the day he says hello.

Cooper

I’m dying.

It’s not a question, it’s a fact. The cancer is eating me alive. They told me I have six months to live, maybe less. I came home, back to Chancellor on Lake Erie, to die. The sunsets are vivid there, and I will relish every one.

I've never seen anything more beautiful than a Lake Erie sunset until I see her.

All life is as fragile as glass.

What would you sacrifice to save the one you love?
REVIEW
I read Poppy Lawless’ The Cupcake Witch, the second book in the Chancellor Fairy Tales series and loved it.  I had to go back and read the first book, The Glass Mermaid.

While I found The Cupcake Witch to be a sweet, magical romance, I found The Glass Mermaid to be heart-breakingly sad.  Kate is the last of her kind and has lived 300 years with the guilt that she wasn’t able to save her family and her merman love. She’s losing her mermaid charm and magic and shedding one single tear could mean the end of her life.  Cooper is a 31-year-old who has returned to Chancellor to die on his terms.

While others don’t know they’re dying, they do.  In doing so, they choose their own path, showing their strength and courage along the way.  Kate and Cooper have waited their entire lives to meet the love of their lives, fall in love, and have a family. Neither expected to meet “the one” just as their lives are about to end, but they do.

Told in first person from dual points of view, you get to see and feel what and how Kate and Cooper are thinking and feeling.  As characters, they’re both great.  Their backgrounds are sad, each have already been through so much.  The beautiful part of this story is the sacrifice one makes for the other, without seeming to truly think about it.  That shows true love.  The Glass Mermaid and The Cupcake Witch will make you believe in the power of love and the special magic it creates.
