It’s Art Basel week in Miami Beach. The event draws hundreds of artists, galleries, art collectors, celebrities, and those who just want to be seen in the “Magical City”. One of those celebrities is Miami’s own Academy Award winner and avid art collector Alessandro “Sandro” Cardenas. Sandro, who usually spends all his time in Los Angeles or on a movie set somewhere, is in town for a short break between projects and to spend time with his friends. He also has a lead on a rare painting by Cuban artist JD Valero, who is secretly his paternal grandfather and the man who raised him.
Angeline “Angel” Louis is Haitian American and the newest sales associate at Gallery Six. She’s originally from Orlando but moved to Miami with her boyfriend, who has since moved on with his life in another country. Angel’s goal, at this point is to save enough money to move back to Orlando. She’s not happy about the prospect, but she feels she’s spent enough time chasing her art dream with nothing to show for it. With things being so busy and hectic at the small gallery, Angel is tasked with taking a JD Valero original to Sandro at his home.
From the moment he lays eyes on her, Sandro is enamored with Angel. Angel is also attracted to Sandro but knows of his playboy ways. After enjoying the evening with Sandro and his friends, the two share a night of passion. Only the next morning, she runs away like Cinderella, trying to avoid midnight. Being the charming man that he is, Sandro convinces Angel to spend more time with him, even as he’s secretly questioning her character.
There’s something extremely appealing about Sandro. You just want to hug the man and take away his pain. And make no mistake, just because he's a leading Hollywood actor and has won an Oscar, doesn't mean he doesn't know pain, isolation, and sadness. He hides it all by always being on as an actor. That is until he meets Angel. They’re different in so many ways, but what draws them together is their love of art. The two didn't burrow themselves into my heart, but I really liked them together. They’re fun and truly complement each other. My heart broke for them both, for different reasons. They each have baggage that they have to decide if they want to throw away or continue to carry. What I REALLY loved about this story is that the romance is real. Yes, Sandro is a celebrity and Angel is an average everyday woman. But the romantic test isn't dark or unbelievable. It's Sandro being a normal guy and messing up.
One of the reasons I love reading Nadine, is her ability to transport me to a place I’ve never been before. She’s descriptive and makes me feel as though I’m a part of the scenes. I’ve never been to Miami, but I feel as though I know what the nightlife is like. What Happens in Miami… is a closed-door romance, with an added mystery. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
