Nina
Jake Jenkins Junior.
The triple J.
Jake Jenkins Jenius.
Not the right spelling, but it didn’t matter to anyone, not back then. Not back in our senior year of high school.
And least of all, him.
One of the kings of Port Ridge’s high school basketball team.
Valedictorian.
Everyone’s friend.
And today, the last person I’d ever want to see again.
Jake Jenkins Junior—the guy who ruined my senior prom—is, of course, my partner at my best friend, Patty’s, wedding.
A heads-up would’ve been nice, but no way will I say that to Patty. She’s my ride-or-die girl. The one I have a bail fund for, and she has one for me. She’s been living her whole life for her wedding day, and just because Patty fell in love with Jake’s best friend, which pairs me up with The Triple J, no way am I going to do anything to upset her.
“Nina, good to see you.” Jake leans in to hug me.
What the… what?
Since when do we hug? Like never. Not even on graduation day when I had to stand next to him for photos, because I was salutatorian.
“Hey, Jake.” I step away from him, really not wanting to hug him, but I’m too slow and find myself wrapped up in his arms. Strong arms press me against an even stronger chest. I take a deep breath and immediately regret it. The scent he’s wearing smells like decadent dark chocolate brownies. My skin tingles and I wish I was wearing more than a sundress. But we’re in Barbados and the weather is hot. Not exactly ‘sweater-and-jeans’ weather, which would do a far better job of hiding my unwanted physical reaction to his closeness.
Yes, Patty and Malcolm decided on a destination wedding. The hotel is right on the beach and the ceremony will take place as the sun is setting. It’s going to be perfect, and I’ve got the best things lined up for Patty this week.
I’ve been so excited to come to this little Caribbean island and trying hard to block out who my partner is going to be. And until he turned up, I’d succeeded.
Mostly.
The hug is going on for longer than is polite, and as I try to extricate myself, Jake gives me one last squeeze. Then I find myself free.
Normally, I can come up with a sharp, get-out-of-my-space comment, but words seem impossible. My body is still reacting to being in Jake’s arms. Still reacting to the heady scent of his aftershave, or body wash, or whatever he sprayed on himself.
“You’re looking good, Nina. You haven’t changed since I last saw you. When was it… at our ten-year class reunion?”
Of course, he’d bring up that night. So many things happened at the reunion. Patty and Malcolm had reconnected and found that they liked liked each other. Jake had arrived and everyone fawned all over him. At the time I was in a relationship which I thought was heading toward a diamond ring, a big, fluffy tulle dress, and a five-layer, chocolate-caramel wedding cake.
How wrong I’d been.
