Most romantic gesture (done or received): Shawn reserved a whole restaurant for us to have dinner for our first date.
Words to live by: Don’t be afraid to take a chance, even if you scares you.
“ARE YOU SERIOUS?” Shawn asked as they stood in front of the ice-skating rink in Millennium Park. They were surrounded by colorful lights and well-lit Christmas trees around the rink. Shawn’s heart rammed against his chest. He was terrified about getting on the ice.
“I’m one hundred percent complaining,” he mumbled.
He didn’t want to make a fool of himself in front of Angela. She stood next to him bouncing back and forth, beaming from ear to ear as they stood in line to rent their skates. He couldn’t understand how she didn’t sense his fear at all.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” she asked.
“Yes, it’s quite beautiful.”
“What’s wrong?” she asked him while he rocked back and forth on his heels, his eyes darting around the ice.
“I’ve never done this before.”
Angela threw her head back and laughed. “Shawn, you’ll be fine. Trust me.”
“I do trust you. That’s not the issue.”
“Well, what’s the issue?”
“Are you strong enough to hold me up?” He laughed.
“Oh, I’ll figure it out. Try not to worry.”
Angela took his hand, and they walked to get their skates. Shawn couldn’t take his eyes off the tumbling bodies on the ice. He felt her hand tightened around his and she smiled at him when he pulled his eyes away from the ice.
“Trust me.”
They walked over to a bench and grabbed a seat.
“It’s really important to make sure that your skates are really tight,” she said. “I’ll double-check them once you get them on.”
Shawn nervously slid his size twelve feet into his ice skates and pulled the laces as tight as he could. Angela took his hands and helped him stand up as his legs wobbled all over the place.
“You have to relax.”
“I’m trying to relax.”
“I need you to try a little harder.” Her laugh broke through. She was struggling as she held his weight against her.
“This isn’t going to work if you keep laughing at me.”
Shawn leaned all of his weight onto Angela while he attempted to take a few steps in the skates.
“I’m doing the best I can, but you’re heavy, Shawn.”
“Are you complaining? I think you are.” He chuckled.
