New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ginny Baird brings her signature charm to this multicultural story about two disputing families sharing a beach house and the messiness that comes from falling in love with someone who your family is determined to despise.
Busy flower shop manager Evita Machado can’t wait to get to Nantucket. With a bad breakup behind her, relaxing at the shore with her folks and her brothers and their families sounds like the sure cure for heartache, and their vacation destination looks like an amazing place! But when they arrive at the quaint rose-covered cottage, another group has already put down stakes: the Hatfields.
Ryan Hatfield was Evita’s former crush from high school, but their business rival moms refused to let them date. Now history professor Ryan is here for a week with his parents, who won them this oceanfront rental in a society silent auction. Once it’s clear there’s been a double-booking due to a bidding mistake, Ryan’s mom digs in her heels, meaning to stay. When Evita’s mom won’t back down either, both sides tepidly agree to share the luxury accommodations by dividing the cozy space.
With the boisterous Machados livening things up and the strait-laced Hatfields tamping them down, can Evita and Ryan keep the peace between the warring factions while fostering a growing chemistry between the two of them?
When it comes to Christmas romances, Ginny Baird is an auto-buy/read for me. Hands down, her stories are amazing. I loved the premise of Right Girl, Wrong Side. The blurb gives off this Hatfields vs. McCoys vibe. And the fact that Ginny is embracing her Latin roots to include multicultural characters definitely had me wanting to read this story.
Right Girl, Wrong Side is the story of two star-crossed lovers (Okay, so Evita Machado and Ryan Hatfield were never lovers, but the possibility was there.) who have grown up in families where their mothers have hated each other for close to forty years. The feud started in high school when Lissette (Evita’s mom) and Daneen (Ryan’s mom) were each running for class president and accused the other of cheating. Since then, the mothers have despised and been in competition with each other. Surprisingly, the mothers are both real estate agents in the same town.
A week-long vacation at a large, lovely, spacious beach house in Nantucket sounds amazing. Winning this type of vacation in an auction is pure luck. Except when the warring Machado and Hatfield matriarchs, with their families in tow, think they both won. It’s been ten years since high school and Ryan and Evita are excited to see each other. They aren’t excited about their families screaming at each other, but they manage to get their parents to agree to split the house equally for the week. That’s easier said than done. Between fighting over umbrellas, ice, and noise, everyone is going to need a vacation from this vacation.
I found Right Girl, Wrong Side to be an entertaining, funny read. There’s romance, but to me, it takes a back seat to the themes of family, friendship, and forgiveness. The initial scenes were good and drew me into the story. But honestly, the childish rivalry and the bickering between the parents, especially the moms was definitely hard to endure. If you can endure the bickering and childish antics for about the first 25% of the book, it’s worth it. Evita and Ryan are good characters, as are all of their siblings. I was excited to see that after ten years, they still liked and were attracted to each other. It was fun watching them be together as friends sneaking around and trying to get their parents to call a cease fire. I loved the way the story played out. You see character growth, while at the same time having your heart ache for those involved. I loved the ending and felt Ginny didn’t leave anything unresolved.
