Saturday night at the movies has some added flair now that Darren and Elise Shultz are reopening one of Salem’s classic theaters. Charlene is delighted to help the couple with their venture, and Darren has lined up a cult classic double-header featuring Lon Chaney in The Wolfman. But things get hairier than expected when Elise starts to choke on her popcorn mid-movie—and once the lights go up, she’s dead...
When tests reveal Elise’s popcorn was poisoned, Detective Sam Holden eyes her husband as the guilty party. Charlene doesn’t believe Darren would hurt his wife—even if his company’s specialty seasoned salts were sprinkled on the fatal snack. But who else had a motive to do something so unsavory? With a little help from Jack, the handsome ghost who haunts her B&B, Charlene delves into the ill-fated couple’s past. And the more she learns, the more Charlene wonders if this time, she’s bitten off more than she can chew...
Dr. Jack Strathmore sits down for a quick interview…
Hello from Charlene’s Bed and Breakfast, the classiest B&B in Salem.
Married, single, or looking?
I was married once upon a time to a woman who didn’t have my best interests at heart. Shana got between me and the love of my life during college. Amelia…. Now, I’m dead. I love Charlene Morris, the only person to see me now that I’m a ghost.
Do you have any children?
This is embarrassing. I had a son that I didn’t know about. Poor kid came to see me at the house, and I denied him. I regret that.
Do you have pets?
Silva. She’s a beauty of a cat and I love to play with her. I wish I’d had pets when I was alive…so many regrets. Maybe that’s why I can’t leave the house? Only Silva and Charlene can see me.
What was it like to discover you were a ghost?
I was in shock. I suppose there is an element of disbelief…how could such a thing happen? I saw that Shana had been cheating on me. I saw what a fool I’d been in my marriage. I was very angry. Since Charlene has moved in, she’s created a home. I’m grateful to be part of it. I worry that I interfere in Charlene’s life too much and wonder if she would be better off without me.
Are you happy, Jack?
Sometimes. I used to be a doctor and I helped people to be well. Now, what do I do? I live vicariously through Charlene and the guests. Is that life? No. I’m dead.
