HOT FOR TEACHER by Monique Fisher ~ Author Interview

Hot for Teacher (Richardson Sibling Trilogy, #1)
by: Monique Fisher
Series: Richardson Sibling Trilogy
Genre: Contemporary African American Romance
Release Date: October 29, 2023

Latrice Richardson is a thirty eight year old divorced, single mother who has an amazing career and a wonderful eight year old son named Quincy. What she doesn't have is any semblance of a love life and sex is non-existent. After a scorching one night stand with a handsome stranger, Nathan Woodson, Latrice never expects to see him again, and definitely not at the front of her son's classroom!

Nathan Woodson is a former foster kid who loves teaching and has just landed his dream job. The last thing he expected was the sexy enchantress he spent the night with, to be the mother of one of his students.

Despite the two of them both trying to keep things professional, Latrice and Nathan find themselves being drawn closer together. But with nosey school moms on the prowl and his job on the line, they find that love may be too hot for this parent and teacher to handle.

Hot for Teacher is a sexy rom-com that features an older woman/younger man, (somewhat) secret lovers and plenty of high heat.

Hi Monique. Welcome to Read Your Writes Book Reviews. How are you?
I’m good. Thank you for this opportunity.

Thank you for being here! Congratulations on the release of Hot for Teacher, the first book in your Richardson Sibling Trilogy. What can you tell me about the story and the series itself?
The story is about a woman, Latrice Richardson, who is skittish about love and a man, Nathan Woodson, who is skittish about approaching people. Thanks to Latrice’s sister, Nadia, the two of them meet and these two apprehensive people each learn to let their walls down.

As for the series. The theme around each novel is fear. We as humans allow fear to dictate a lot of our decisions, particularly with our love lives. Each Richardson sibling (Latrice, Thaddeus, and Nadia) has to learn how to let go of their fears and open themselves to love.

Do the three Richardson siblings' fears come as a result of their childhood?
Yes, but not in the way most would think. Their parents have an amazing marriage and growing up witnessing their parents' relationship thrive gave them a sense of hope that real life turned into fear. For Latrice, seeing an idyllic love between two people resulted in her rushing into a marriage, believing she had found the same thing as her parents. In the end, she was left hurt and afraid of putting her heart out for another man again. Each sibling saw their parents as relationship goals but didn't factor in how difficult it is to achieve that goal.

I can see how wanting to have what their parents have could make them view some things through rose-colored glasses. What are some tropes found in the story and what do you love about writing these tropes?
The tropes include older woman/younger man, sexy meet cute, forbidden love, family meddling, and lots o’spice.

I love everything about these tropes! If you notice a good number of them are staples in rom-coms with the meet cute being one of the main tropes. The same with meddling families. I tend to write, then figure out the tropes after, and those two tend to make repeat appearances in my work.

Latrice Richardson and Nathan Woodson are the heroine and hero of the story. Tell me how these two meet and what draws them to one another.
Nathan and Latrice meet at a restaurant called Cork & Marble. She’s having dinner with her sister, who is trying to get Latrice to loosen up and have a one-night stand. Meanwhile, Nathan is there for a date that stands him up. The attraction at first is purely physical and sexual but as they talk more and get to know each other, they fall in love. Latrice loves Nathan’s devotion to his job, she loves how kind and sweet, intelligent and earnest he is. And Nathan basically just worships Latrice, lol. That woman is a goddess to him. He’s impressed by her business savvy, in awe of her strength, and adores her inside and out.

Aww. I love that. What was your favorite part of Hot for Teacher to write?
My favorite part is when Latrice finds out that Nathan is her son Quincy’s new teacher. I loved writing her reaction.

That could definitely be fun and upsetting and a little embarrassing. Can you tell me about one of your favorite scenes from the book, and why is it a favorite?
It’s a scene that involves Nathan talking to Latrice’s employee, Ingrid. For someone who isn’t the most vocal and can be socially awkward, the fact that Nathan went out of his way to initiate a conversation with someone showed just how much Latrice has inspired him to push his fears aside.

Let’s talk about covers. I love the covers of all of your books. Do you design them yourself, or do you work with someone?
I work with the brilliant Leni Kauffman and the fabulous Brynn. Brynn has done the covers for Take Care and This Christmas and Leni did the covers for Hot for Teacher and Where There is Smoke… And working with Leni is great. For Hot for Teacher, I told her I wanted them in a classroom with him writing the title on the board, her holding an apple and sitting on his desk. I, then sent her some images so she’d have an idea of what the characters look like. From there she sends me a preliminary sketch, which I give notes on, then she moves on to coloring and sends me the final cover.

They are both very talented. Here’s a difficult question. Who are some of your favorite authors?
Too many to name but I will try:
  • Lady Marie
  • Alexandria House
  • Farrah Rochon
  • AE Valdez
  • Natasha Bishop
  • Brookelyn Mosley
  • Kasha Thompson

What’s next for you?

I am currently working on the follow-up to Hot for Teacher entitled Spend My Life with You and I’m adding two more novellas to my RCU (Rom-Com Universe). The first is a follow-up to Take Care and the second is an erotic romance with Friends to Lovers as one of the tropes. I don’t yet have a title for either novella but stay tuned.

Monique, thank you for answering some questions for me.
Thank you!
