Series: Magical Fortune Cookie
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Release Date: February 20, 2024

Felicity Jin grew up literally hanging onto Mom’s apron strings in their magical bakery in the quaint town of Pixie, California. Her mother’s enchanted baked goods, including puffy pineapple buns and creamy egg tarts, bring instant joy to all who consume them. Felicity has always been hesitant in the kitchen herself after many failed attempts, but a takeout meal gone wrong inspires her to craft some handmade fortune cookies.

They become so popular that Felicity runs out of generic fortunes and starts making her own personalized predictions. When one customer’s ill-fated fortune results in his murder, Felicity’s suspiciously specific fortune has the police focusing on her as the main culprit. Now Felicity must find a way to turn her luck around and get cleared from suspicion.

Good morning Felicity. Welcome to Read Your Writes Book Reviews. How are you?
I’m doing well. Thanks for interviewing me today!

Before we get started, can you please introduce yourself to readers?
I’m 28 years old, and I work in our family bakery with my mom. We Jins have been baking joyous treats for generations.

Can you please tell us about some people we’ll meet in your story?
On our small cul-de-sac of shops, we also have Love Blooms, run by my loyal best friend Kelvin, who’s a florist. Then there’s Paz Illuminations, the candle shop managed by my enigmatic godmother Alma. Two new additions have recently appeared in my life. Whiskers, my pet bunny, showed up one evening after I made a heartfelt wish. Then there’s Detective Rylan Sun, the cop who’s all cold glares and hot suspicions with me.

Tell me about a defining moment in your life.
When Kelvin and I ate a bad Chinese takeout meal, I decided to make a sweet dessert afterward. I accidentally stumbled onto my signature recipe for handmade fortune cookies.

What’s your most prized possession?
Our bakery. I grew up there, and the bakery is tied to my roots—and my mom’s happiness.

How do you come up with personalized predictions for your fortune cookies?
They just come to me. It’s like they surpass my brain and go directly onto the paper.

Why do you feel the need to put on your sleuthing hat and investigate murders?
Detective Sun is on my case—I mean, so what if I predicted someone’s death in a knowing way and the body showed up behind our bakery?

When you aren’t investigating murders, what do you like to do?
Kelvin and I like to hang out together, but Pixie is a boring small town. Sometimes we’ll head over to Fresno and go to interesting local sites, like the underground gardens.

I’m a romance girl. Is there any chance of a budding romance in your future? If so, I want ALL the details!
Well, Kelvin did do a promposal in high school, but we’ve been friends since diaper days. There will never be anything between us, right?

Never say never. What’s next for you?
We’ve been asked to cater a local wedding, and it’ll be fun to build a cake made out of egg tarts. What could go wrong at such a festive event?

Felicity, thank you so much for your time.
