A Travel Guide for Bushwhack, New Mexico
When I first got my idea for the Southwest Exposure Series, we were on a family trip to Red River, New Mexico. Red River is a town nestled in the mountains, with no chain restaurants and my husband says that it still looks like it’s stuck in the eighties. Red River as a frequent vacation spot for my husband as a child. The community is a magical place, transporting tourists back to their childhood void of electronics and air pods. After taking my kids there, I knew I wanted to set a series in a fictionalized version of Red River.
Once, I got back home I started to plot my fictionalized town called Bushwhack and the many quirky characters that inhabit it. I decided on setting the first murder case around rafting, because the summer prior we’d taken our kids on their first rafting trip, and I knew such a setting would a be a thrilling adventure.
And that’s how Bushwhack, New Mexico was born.
So, let’s see what a reader would do if they went on a summer vacation to Bushwhack, New Mexico.
Bushwhack is a small mountain community where the locals know everyone and everyone’s business. They know the usual tourists and the newbie ones who have just found their quant mountain town. There’s a Main Street connecting the town from edge of the mountain to the other. And a park smack in the middle of the town where tourist can sit or rent ATV’s.
If you by chance travel to Bushwhack, you’ll want to go on a nature hike to take in the scenic views or ride the ski lift in the summer months to the bike trails on the backside of the mountain. And just a few miles outside of town is a ghost town occupied by chipmunks. It’s a highlight for most tourists who came for the mountain air and are looking for a slow unadventurous day.
But if you want adventure the only place to book an expedition is through Sullivan’s Adventure Tours. Ask any local and they’ll tell you Andie Sullivan is the best guide around. They’ll also tell you that Andie is known to find a corpse or two. Oh, no. Not like that. She just has a nose for crime solving, and murder has a way of finding her.
And if you’re not much into the criminal adventure, you could always hit up the only ice creamery in town and try one of the Joelle Lemon’s unique ice cream flavors. From there, I’d suggest a night out at Juanita’s Mexican restaurant. But don’t expect to taste New Mexico’s famous green chili at Juanita’s, because the funny thing about Bushwhack is that it was settled by Texans and the only Mexican food served in town is Tex-Mex.
When night falls, you can sit on the porch of your rented condo and sip wine as you listen to the mountain creatures talk to the stars. But don’t get too cozy, because you never know if you’ll spot Andie Sullivan searching for clues determined to solve Bushwhack’s latest murder mystery.
