When his family’s company is on the line, business and pleasure definitely don’t mix, but maybe they should…
Madeline Ross left the city and a career glass ceiling behind, hoping to build a new life as the crew supervisor for Walker Construction in River’s Edge. She’s qualified and experienced, but new CEO Jackson Walker hires someone else. Even as she searches for a different job and builds a life in River’s Edge, the sexy memory of Jack teases.
After a rough year, Jackson Walker’s family business is still struggling. He needs a new construction crew supervisor, and Maddie Ross is perfect, except for the first time in his life, player Jack is suddenly smitten with the curvaceous redhead. He wants her in his bed more than on his payroll.
When his second-rate new hire is a disastrous mistake, Jack humbles himself on Maddie’s doorstep with an offer she can’t refuse. Maddie could be the key to saving his company as long as he hides his heart. But does he have to?
I don’t think there’s a fictional town I love more than Nan Reinhardt’s River’s Edge, Indiana. I love the small-town vibe and the fact that everyone cares about one another, without being overbearing.
Readers first met members of the Walker family in Home to River’s Edge, the first book in The Weavers Sisters series. Make You Mine is the first book in The Walkers of River’s Edge series and stands on its own. Note that characters from all of Nan’s series set in River’s Edge make appearances.
Make You Mine is the story of Jack Walker (older brother of Eli from Home to River’s Edge) and Maddie Ross, a new addition to River’s Edge after her father Gerry married Jane Lange in Falling for the Doctor, book two in The Lange Brothers series. Jack is the new CEO of Walker Construction, a family-owned business. He is slowly coming to realize that the title and job are a lot harder than he expected. With the downturn of the economy, increased supply prices, and the loss of several big commercial bids, the company is relying heavily on its custom home builds. Jack is definitely feeling stressed. Meeting Maddie turns his world on its axis and he doesn’t know what to do or how to feel about it. Jack just knows that he shouldn’t mix business and pleasure. So while Maddie is the most qualified for the crew supervisor position, he hires someone else only to find himself begging Maddie to take the job.
I loved the character of Maddie and Jack. Their attraction was noticeable for everyone to see, especially when they each tried to hide it from themselves and each other. Make You Mine is an opposites attract, he falls first, workplace, seasoned romance with both characters being over 35. The chemistry between these two was off the charts and fun to watch.
The story includes a scene of violence which I didn’t expect and wasn’t prepared for. Personally, I don’t think it added to the story. My opinion is that the scene could have been removed without changing the flow and course of the story. I know my reading enjoyment took a huge hit. Needless to say, I can’t wait to return to River’s Edge for the next Walker story.
