Slay like no one is watching…in the jaw-dropping, vamp-enemies-to-lovers sequel to Sign of the Slayer
There are things I love about being a slayer. Being faster and stronger than everyone else? Love it. Taking down a bunch of evil bloodsuckers before they feed on the innocent? That’s my vibe. Working with the American Slayer Society and creating weapons out of thin air? Here for all of it.
But there are some things I didn’t sign up for, and they’re becoming increasingly harder to deal with. People making my life miserable, vampire treachery, heavy-as-all-hell responsibilities I didn’t ask for…all the pressure is growing. Exponentially.
I didn’t ask for any of it. Not the black-out rage that’s consuming my closest relationships. Not the lies fed to me by those I trusted—and even my own family. And definitely not the voices from the stone that follow me wherever I go. Guiding me. Taunting me. Haunting me.
Because there’s big work to do, and the greatest—and oldest—threat to humanity is now alive, kicking, and thirsty as hell. None of us are safe. And the only person who can help me is the one whose kiss can ignite my soul…or shatter it to a thousand slayer pieces.
Catching feelings is one thing. But following him into the underworld to save the world?
That’s an even more terrifying problem.
The American Slayer Society series is best enjoyed in order.
Sharina Harris’s Sign of the Slayer was one of those books that piqued my interest months before it came out. Unconsciously, I kept thinking about it and knew it had to be special. And to me, it totally was. It’s a diverse book where the lead characters are both people of color. Sharina has taken vampire slayer versus vampire lore and made it fit into modern day, where teenagers/young adults drive the story and become the heroes.
When Sign of the Slayer ends, you know that it is anything but the end. I had no idea where Sharina was going to take Raven aka Texas and Khamari but I knew that while these two were on opposite sides they still had so much left between them. I also knew that there were still a lot of unanswered questions. Soul of the Stone picks up about four to six weeks after the end of Sign of the Slayer. Both groups have had the opportunity to regroup and plan their next moves. But everything isn’t as black and white as one would think.
Khamari is now the vampire king of his clan, but his heart belongs to Raven and his older brother Khaven, who’s dying. Texas fully intends to destroy every vampire and rid the world of them. Well, reluctantly all except for her vampire allies who have always worked with the different slayer factions around the world.
Texas is the Maximus, meaning the Philosopher’s Stone chose her, thus making her the most powerful of all the slayers. She has extraordinary powers that she loves. She just didn’t realize that the stone that is now part of her contained a hundred other souls that unexpectedly speak to her. Saving the world falls on her shoulders. She’s going to have to put aside all the lies she’s been told and the betrayal she feels to trust those closest to her to defeat the father of all vampires.
Soul of the Stone was more of Texas's journey. At 18/19, Sign of the Slayer changed her life and took her away from what she knew and the normalcy a teenager has and expects. Soul of the Stone puts her on a path of true self discovery and forgiveness.
While I thought Sign of the Slayer was intense, with its fight scenes and shocking discoveries, I didn’t think Soul of the Stone rose to that level. There are still fight scenes and discoveries to be made, but the vibe just seemed different. Soul of the Stone is told in dual POVs, with the final one leaving you shocked, scratching your head, and wondering what’s going to happen next. Because seriously. What. The. HECK?! I need the next book now!
