the truth behind a string of suspicious deaths?
Washington D.C. Cara Knight needs more hours in the day. But the promising young woman soon loses the position for interfering in a homicide investigation.
When Cara discovers her protégée’s body in similar circumstances, she hunts for a connection while struggling to survive the nasty new dean’s scrutiny. With the help of her sidekick mother-in-law, can Cara chase down the culprit before the next victim lands in the morgue?
Murder off U Street is the gripping second book in the Academic Mom Mysteries. If you like relatable characters, high stakes with a splash of humor, and exploring the nation’s capital, then you’ll love Jacque Rosman’s new riveting read.
Hi Cara. Welcome to Read Your Writes Book Reviews. Please introduce yourself to readers.
Hi, I'm an assistant professor of social work in my early 40s, teaching at Virginia University's Northern Virginia satellite campus. I'm married to Seth, a government lawyer, and I became a mother later in life. We have two preschoolers—a boy and a girl—who couldn't be more different from each other.
Can you please tell us about some people we’ll meet in your story?
My Miami-based mother-in-law, Barbara, becomes an unlikely sidekick during her prolonged visits. I frequently interact with Sergeants Bronson and Reynolds from Homicide. Though they can't stand each other, they share a tendency to jump to conclusions without considering alternative possibilities.
Tell me about a defining moment in your life.
Solving my first mystery, Murder in Georgetown, became a defining moment in my life. It revealed how I could channel my thirst for justice alongside my professional skills—assessment, building rapport, and getting people to talk—into crime solving.
What’s your most prized possession?
Beyond people, my laptop is essential—it houses all my academic work and serves as a primary research tool for crime-solving.
Why do you feel the need to put on your sleuthing hat and investigate murders?
In Murder off U Street, one of my top students takes charge of a research project with DC Metro Police, evaluating their Victim Services response to intimate partner violence. When she becomes entangled in a possible homicide investigation and is later found dead from an alleged suicide, I throw myself into the case to clear her name and uncover the truth.
