PSYCHIC IN SUBURBIA by KC Freeman ~ Character Interview, Excerpt & Giveaway

Psychic in Suburbia
By: KC Freeman
Genre: Paranormal Cozy Mystery
Release Date: September 23, 2025

There’s nothing magical about midlife for Abby McBride, unless dealing with pesky ghosts counts.

Between hot flashes and brain fog and the dead paying a call at all hours, she’s had her share of spirited mayhem, while trying to hold up a perfect image among her cul-de-sac crowd. Not easy! But, after decades of suppressing her psychic gift, it all comes crashing down at the annual Halloween bash and her quiet suburban life goes up in spectral smoke.

The ghosts of 125 Magnolia Lane have demands and are not opposed to dragging the living into their hellish afterlife if that’s what it takes. Can Abby finally embrace the powers she’s long denied in order to save her family and friends from eternal destruction? But at what cost to her reputation, her sanity, marriage and possibly even her freedom?

When Ghost Whisperer meets Bad Moms, haunted hijinks are inevitable among dysfunctional friendships and an intrepid heroine who’s so done playing nice. That’s right! DONE! Get set for a thrill ride that will leave readers with a tale of laugh out loud, heart-tugging midlife magic and mayhem.

Hi Abby. Welcome to Read Your Writes Book Reviews. How are you?
I’m so hyped to be here with you today. It’s such a pleasure. Thank you for having me.

You’re welcome. Please introduce yourself to readers.
Hi, everyone! I’m Abby, the suburban psychic or whatever they’re calling me these days. The crow’s feet and the gray poking out on top of my head gives you an idea of my age, but let’s say it falls in the mid-forties/midlife range and leave it at that. I am a stay-at-home (SAHM) and now part-time paranormal investigator. The last few years, my interests lay in how to survive the day-to-day mom chaos while shooing away pesky spirits who think I’m here as their personal therapist or something. Now, I’m enjoying life a bit more, being active, and learning the techy side of ghost hunting.

Can you please tell us about some people we’ll meet in your story?
Well, of course, there’s my amazing hubby, Tanner. He was completely in the dark about my psychic abilities until recently, so we’re currently in a bit of marriage therapy to work through some trust issues, but still just as in love as the day we met twenty-plus years ago. We have three amazing kiddos—Alexandra (who is in pre-med at college), and our twins, Davis and Easton, who keep me running ragged with baseball stuff.

Krissy and Cal are my friends with the ghost problem. Beforehand, we had bonded over our children’s shared sports activities. Being a year-round travel baseball parent is not for the faint of heart. They were too embarrassed to admit to their ghost problem, but after the Halloween party where the spirits strung Krissy up on the wall… Well, let’s just say, they could no longer pretend and were all to happy for my help…as long as we didn’t tell anybody they had ghosts.

Jillian is Krissy’s best friend. They are connected at the hip. And Jillian is a scary protective MamaBear when it comes to her friends. Honestly, if I were a ghost and Jillian was coming after me, I’d exorcise myself.

My fur baby (5 pound Chihuahua) ChiChi is my most precious comfort in this world, even if she barks at everything living and non-living.

The bane of my existence is Dudley Doo-Right (aka Officer FrownyFace GrumpyPants), excuse me, I mean Officer Douglas. The ghosts cause all sorts of havoc, and he blames me for everything, as if I could make the silverware dance two-stories above our heads!

Oh, and I can’t forget my main man—my spirit guide, George!

Sounds like quite a cast of characters. Tell me about a defining moment in your life.
Let’s see. There have been several. But the most defining? Probably the moment my parents demanded I stop seeing/hearing/speaking to ghosts or they’d shove me in a mental institution (I was just a small child so… Yeah, that was traumatizing). I pretended for 38 years not to see spirits everywhere I went and kept my mouth shut. It made me afraid to speak up or open up and be myself. It wasn’t until the ghosts got tired of me ignoring them and caused a ruckus at Krissy’s party that I had no choice but to admit I was a psychic medium.

What’s your most prized possession?
My collection of crystals, and the handwritten note from my daughter when she left for college.

Why do you feel the need to put on your sleuthing hat and investigate murders?
Well, I investigate ghosts. Sometimes that means they want me to find the truth about how and why they were unalived. Other times, they just need to get something off their chest in order to move on into the light.

What can readers expect from Psychic in Suburbia?
Psychic in Suburbia is more than just a quirky ghost story—it’s a brave and funny exploration of what it means to reclaim yourself after years of trying to fit in. This book will make you laugh, give you chills, and hit you in the heart. Think Gilmore Girls but haunted; or Ghost Whisperer meets Bad Moms.

Abby, thank you so much for your time.
Thank you so much for having me here today. I’ll leave the home-baked chocolate chip pound cake on the table on my way out. Hope you enjoy it.
Every step grows harder to make the closer I get to the playroom door. My invisible cement shoes aren’t helping, but neither is Jillian yanking me in the opposite direction.

Yep, I may need a chiropractor after this.

Shadows cluster along the walls, up the ceiling, slithering by my feet like a snake along the wooden planks. A wave of dizziness crashes over me, intensifying with every step until my fingers finally reach out toward the doorknob.

“Abby.” Tanner calls out, but it is too late. The door swings open. I hadn’t touched it.

Windows cover the outer wall of the room. All closed. A frigid wind circles the room, sending a mass of toys into a mini tornado. The large screen television lets out an eerie flickering glow. Despite the wind and the tv, it’s quiet. No… Silent.

Jillian rushes into the room, screaming for Krissy, only to be violently tossed back into the hallway like a ragdoll. She shrieks, followed by a loud crash. The guys yell for me to get out of there, but the french doors slam shut leaving me alone in the room. The walls, ceiling, and floor shake with the force of the wind.

Something soft smacks the tip of my nose. Looking down, a foam dart lays at my feet. Good thing they don’t have real darts because that would’ve hurt!

At first, I don’t see Krissy and open my mouth to call out for her, but whatever held onto my wrist now whips me around to the left so fast the bones in my neck crack. There, standing plastered against the far wall with her hands spread wide above her head; her usually hazel eyes shining with an iridescent silver light; strawberry-blonde hair streaked with red and black hairspray splayed across the wall; and the toy zombie baby straining against her shirt as if trying to break free waving the plastic knife like a horror film doll, is my friend, Krissy, with her mouth opened in a soundless scream.

After leaving the corporate world to raise her five rambunctious children with her husband in North Carolina, KC Freeman eventually found her way back to her lifelong desire to write paranormal fiction.

First, she dipped her toes in the writing world by ghostwriting cozy mysteries and romance novels. Once confident of her creative writing skills, she struck out on her own to write urban fantasy and paranormal romance with her debut novel, Rekindled Prophecy: Greylyn the Guardian Angel Book 1. A few books later, KC added the label, “USA Today Best-Selling Author” with her paranormal romance, Renegade Angel, incorporated into the Realm of Darkness box set.

KC writes mostly urban fantasy and paranormal romance novels. She also spends a lot of time editing manuscripts with her company, Book Mage Editing, and is certified by the Professional Book Editors Association.

Now that her five children are grown and flown, KC spends her time writing, editing, reading, hiking, exercising (in an attempt to get back a semblance of her pre-menopause body), and spoiling her fur baby chihuahua, Harley.
