Three teens infiltrate the magical ivy league in this heart-stopping dark academia romantasy, the first in a young adult duology from #1 New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.
Raven, Atticus, and Dorian have dreamed of attending Sibylline for as long as they can remember. But when the magical ivy league rejects them, the friends’ plans of a future together studying the arcane begin crashing down.
Until they decide to steal an education.
Getting jobs on campus, they sneak into lectures and swipe forbidden texts, dodging the administration’s watchful eye. In the quiet of night, in the thrill of secrecy, their magic awakens. And so do long-buried attractions that turn their friendship into something more.
But like magic, love can create, and it can destroy. As unrequited feelings and resentment threaten to fracture their bond, the trio discovers an insidious magic that has sunk its claws into Sibylline, killing students and corroding the very bones of the university. Now the three intruders may be the key to saving the institution from wreckage . . . if they don’t wreck one another first.
Sibylline is the second book I've read from Melissa de la Cruz, and marks my first time reading one of her young adult books. What drew me to the story was the idea of magic and teens finding a way to get into their dream university, even after being rejected.
Atticus Garcia, Dorian Winthrop, and Raven Chen have been the best of friends for three or four years now, and for almost as long, they have all secretly crushed on each other. Atticus likes Dorian, Dorian likes Raven, and Raven likes Atticus. To avoid ruining their friendship, no one has confessed their true feelings.
The trio dreams of attending Sibylline College of Magical Arts, a prestigious magical university, together. However, when their applications are all rejected without explanation, they decide to get jobs on campus with the hopes of sneaking into lectures and events. Everything goes according to plan: Atticus gets a job as an assistant to an architectural professor, Dorian works for a museum authenticating pieces, and Raven becomes a library assistant.
With the pressure of their new jobs, frustration at not being able to learn and advance their magic, and their complicated love triangle, the trio’s friendship is put to the test. Soon, they discover something sinister happening at the university. They must work together to uncover the truth, but they soon realize danger is closer than they think.
Sibylline was more than I expected. The story is told from three points of view, which for me, at times made it a little confusing. I enjoyed how the mystery unfolded, with everything sneaking up on me. I really liked the twist at the end. The romance on the surface is complicated, but it unfolds naturally, slowly. When the physical does happen, it becomes an open-door romance. The last line of the book had me screaming, “WHAT?!” The possibilities of the next book are endless. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how everything plays out.
