Familiars serve. Vampires command. But hearts never obey.

Cassandra Rollins was born to serve the immortal. A human familiar bound to the will of vampires, she’s spent her life walking the razor’s edge between power and peril. No creature—living or undead—has ever shaken her control. Until him.

Ruairidh Calder, a Scottish vampire forged in battle and haunted by centuries of war, is ready to abandon his wandering life. But when he settles in New York’s glittering vampire court, he’s forced to rely on Cassandra—his reluctant guide and the one human who defies him at every turn.

Their fiery clash ignites a forbidden desire neither can contain. Yet when vampires and their human familiars begin to vanish, their uneasy partnership turns into a fight for survival. In a city pulsing with dark magic and ancient rivalries, Cassandra must decide whether to trust the immortal who tempts her heart—or risk losing everything to the darkness hunting them both.

In a world ruled by blood and power, love is the most dangerous vow of all.

These Immortal Vows marks my first time reading Kelsey McKnight, and I can say it definitely won't be the last. This is the first book in the Bound by Blood series.

Cassandra Rollins was born into a line of vampire familiars, known as Familiar of the Blood. She’s a human who assists a vampire with whatever they need, basically a personal assistant. Cassie’s vampire boss is Alessandro Benevoglio, whom her family has worked for for generations.

Ruairidh Calder has been a vampire for hundreds of years. He’s traditionally a loner but is now ready to come into the modern world and plant roots. Unlike Alessandro, Ruairidh doesn’t have a familiar. With Alessandro leaving the country for an artifact-collecting tour, he asks Cassandra to assist Ruairidh with getting the required papers to pass as human and to help him locate an apartment/house to purchase.

Cassandra really can't stand Ruairidh, and he has no idea what he’s done to her. The fact that he calls her “Cassie” when it’s not her name, and she’s asked him not to several times, is just the tip of the iceberg.

While Cassandra is helping Ruairidth, there’s a sudden wave of vampires and some familiars residing in NYC going missing, with some being found dead. Since Alessandro is out of town, Ruairidth takes it upon himself to keep Cassie safe, which forces them to live together. This forced proximity allows them to see each other in a whole new light. And when Cassandra’s life is at stake, he risks his own to save her.

I loved this book! Cassandra and Ruairidh were great characters. Their back and forth banter was at times fun and tender. I loved the tension of will they/won’t they. This is a slow burn romance where he falls first. What really sealed this story for me was the suspense elements. There was just enough not to be over the top, yet still keep you on the edge of your seat.

The next book in this series is These Immortal Nights, featuring Alessandro. I’m looking forward to reading it and seeing how it complements These Immortal Vows.
