From the publisher who brought you Fourth Wing comes your next romantasy obsession...
For nineteen-year-old Poet Graves, New Manhattan has always promised safety―if she obeys. Raised within the ruling Houses and betrothed to a powerful heir, she enters Amery Academy knowing her future has already been decided.
But Amery is nothing like she imagined. Its trials are brutal, its loyalties conditional, and its rules designed to expose weakness. As Poet struggles to survive, she must hide the truth that could get her executed: the storms don’t fear her―they answer back.
When a dangerous outsider from beyond the city walls enters the academy, Poet is drawn to him despite everything she’s been taught to believe. He threatens the life she’s been promised. And choosing him could cost her not just her future, but her freedom.
A gripping dystopian romance filled with forbidden power, ruthless challenges, and a heroine who refuses to burn quietly―perfect for fans of Divergent and The Hunger Games.
I am obsessed with Nisha J. Tuli’s Storm Breaker! It's an upper YA Dystopian Romantic Fantasy, set in New Manhattan in the year 3067. The world has been destroyed due to greed and environmental disrespect. Now, everyone lives with the consistent threat of severe and deadly storms.
Poet Graves is a nineteen-year-old Society member, a wealthy and elite group made up of four Houses that oversee and control food, health, manufacturing, and security. She’s starting her first year at Amery Academy, where her parents expect her to toe the line by pledging to stay in Fiama House (led by her father, who oversees the security of New Manhattan) and marry the boy chosen by her father, solidifying his stay in the leadership role. Poet knows what is expected of her, and while she doesn't want to follow her father's commands, she knows she has no choice.
Rook Athira is a Solitude and is considered less than. Solitudes live in the Wastes (the uninhabitable wilderness surrounding New Manhattan). They are people who have been cast aside or choose not to live in New Manhattan for various reasons and are forbidden from entering. Rook is the first Solitude to attend Amery Academy in roughly ten years. He's closed off, a little intimidating, and only speaks when the situation calls for him to do so.
Poet and Rook end up forming an unlikely friendship, and quickly realize they're both hiding a secret that could literally get them killed. Their chemistry is slow burn in the best possible way. Rook even vows to protect Poet, though he doesn’t specifically say from what or why.
I’m not sure what I was expecting when I started reading Storm Breaker. I just know that I found myself glued to the pages.
I loved Poet and Rook. Poet endures abuse from both her father and boyfriend. Yet she is kind-hearted and cares deeply for her friends, her mother, and even people she doesn’t know. She wants to carve out her own path in life, but is stifled by her father and his demands. Rook is a total mystery, and I loved slowly learning more about him. Trust me, he is 100% book boyfriend material. And that hug he gave Poet? It was everything.
Storm Breaker was one of those stories that truly surprised me and left me wanting more. Friendship and loyalties are tested. Alliances are formed and destroyed. Secrets are revealed. If I didn’t think of Storm Breaker as a 5-star book before (which I did), the ending sealed it. I’ve read the final chapter three times, as of writing this review, and it still takes my breath away. What was that ending?!?! I need the next book! Seriously. I need it now.
Additional Note: The hardcover edition includes two bonus chapters from Rook’s POV! I really love Rook.
**Received an ARC from the publisher and voluntarily reviewed it. Also personally purchased a couple hardcover editions.**
