When a good deed might lead to murder…
Coerced into posing as a seer at her small town’s spring fair, barista and aspiring artist Amelia Wethers dives into the dramatic role, comforting herself that it’s only a few hours and then she can indulge in sweet and savory snacks. When the wealthy and snarky Summer Foster swans into her tent inquiring about the expected success of her swanky summer party, Amelia’s not prepared for the crystal ball to fill with smoke and reveal the shockingly violent murder of Summer’s husband.
Amelia grapples with skepticism, anger, and scorn as she tries to warn wealthy scion Phillip Foster that he’s a target for murder in a few weeks. Discovering she’s descended from a long line of psychics complicates Amelia’s investigation, especially when the town’s newest and distressingly handsome homicide detective dogs her every step and suspects her of murder.
It’s a race to the finish, and Amelia will do anything—including pre-dawn hot yoga, adopting her brother’s feral ferrets, missing dessert, setting herself up as bait and making a fool of herself—to stalk a killer.
Hi JP. Welcome back to Read Your Writes Book Reviews.
Hi! Thank you so much for having me. I’m really excited to be here.
What drew you to writing cozy mysteries?
I love cozy mysteries. I have so many favorite cozy authors. I love how they’re often a series, so you get to know the characters really well; they become part of your family. I started to write The Suddenly Psychic Novels during COVID as a form of escapism. The world was so heavy, and I needed something that would make me laugh, and I would look forward to spending time doing it. I’ve always loved to write but could never find the time to sit down and write a book from beginning to end.
Congratulations on the release of Murder at First Sight, the first book in your Suddenly Psychic cozy mystery series. Can you please tell me about the series and what readers can expect from Murder at First Sight?
Thank you! I can’t wait for Murder at First Sight to be released. It’s releasing July 1, 2026, which is Canada Day, and I’ve decided the celebrations that day are for my book release. It’s nice that all of Canada is celebrating with me the release of Murder at First Sight🤣.
I hope readers laugh and enjoy The Suddenly Psychic Novels’ world. My characters are all a little quirky. It’s a fun and (as my mother put it) an unputdownable read. The series is set in a close-knit small town with a lot of recurring characters, so readers get a chance to get to know everyone well.
Murder at First Sight sees the great lengths Amelia will go to stop the murder she had a vision of. She’s not afraid to put herself out there and gets into all sorts of situations on her quest.
Tell me about some of the characters we’ll meet in the book and series.
The lead character is Amelia Wethers. Ami is a little clumsy, she has a big heart, and she’s not afraid to embarrass herself to get to the bottom of the mystery. She is the manager of Brewhaha, a café her best friend, Carolyn, owns. She lives above it in a small apartment. She is in her late twenties and a little bit of an underachiever. She’s still finding her place in the world, which she eventually will.
Caro, her bestie, is married with three kids and wavers between reigning Ami’s outlandish ideas and/or joining them with everything she has. They are extremely close and supportive of one another.
Ami’s is close with her family. Her mom can be a tad judgmental while her dad is her rock. Her brother Laurence, who is a couple years younger, shares a lot of Ami’s underachieving characteristics. I adore Laurence. I know as soon as he shows up in a scene, something ridiculous is going to happen. I had so much fun creating his character and thinking up the random things he says.
And Nick. The hot new detective in town. He and Ami are attracted to one another but Ami’s a little hesitant. She just found out she’s psychic. She’s had some awful visions, and she’s worried about telling people. She tries to fight her attraction but also needs him on her side to save Phillip Foster.
When you started writing Murder at First Sight, did you know who the killer was, or was it a surprise to you as the story progressed?
I did know, and it’s discovered pretty early who the killer is. Amelia can’t prove anything, though, as she saw the murder in a vision, so she spends most of the book trying to figure out the when and where so she can stop it before it happens.
Final question. Do you have a favorite scene you can tell us about?
I love the hot yoga scene. It’s so ridiculous, but also, I could see it happening to me if I tried hot yoga. Amelia does not fare well when she tries her first class, and every time I read that scene, I laugh. And any page with Laurence on it, he’s just so ridiculous.
JP, thank you so much for taking the time to answer some questions for me.

JP writes cozy mysteries with quirky characters that make her laugh when they disagree with the laid-out plans for their story and take her on a different path. She lives in Winnipeg, Canada, and hates the cold weather but loves the winter months because they’re a great excuse to hibernate with a cup of tea or a glass of red wine. When she’s not writing or reading, she spends her summers in the garden and her winters plotting how to win her neighbourhood Christmas display competition. They don’t know it’s a competition, but she plays to win nonetheless.
