It was the best of crimes, it was the worst of crimes, and Nick and Nora are dead-set on catching a killer without losing their heads…
When local police suspect that a dead body found in the woods is tied to an unsolved heist of rare gold coins, Nora Charles and her sidekick cat Nick are dying to get involved. But she’s got a catering gig to plan for at her friend Lance’s bar, and it looks like that might present a world of trouble all its own. The sleazy former owner of the bar has blown back into town and is aggressively harassing Lance to sell the bar back to him. Nora’s worried her friend is in real danger—until the former owner is found dead and Lance is pegged for the murder.
Certain that her friend is innocent, Nora begins digging into the victim’s seedy past to figure out who would have wanted him dead. Then a sudden spark of inspiration tells her that the murders and the unsolved heist are all connected, and that someone is knocking off their fellow thieves to get all the loot for themselves. After tracking down every person even remotely connected to the heist, Nora’s still baffled by who’s behind it all. But that’s about to change, because now she and Nick are all that’s standing between a killer and a fortune…
Includes mouthwatering sandwich recipes!
Hi Nora. Welcome to Read Your Writes Book Reviews. How are you?
Excellent, and thank you for having me! I’m so glad to be here. I’ve had my own mystery series since 2014, but this is my first time here! So allow me to introduce myself. My name is Nora Charles, and I’ve often been told I resemble Myrna Loy – especially with my auburn hair! Agewise, I’m on the sunny side of forty. I was a true crime reporter in Chicago, but I gave it up to return to my hometown of Cruz, California, to manage my mother’s sandwich shop after she passed. I do keep my hand in reporting by writing articles for an online magazine, NOIR, which usually involves me in my hobby of solving mysteries!
Can you please tell us about some people we’ll meet in your story?
Well, there is my current boyfriend, FBI agent Leroy Samms…my kid sister, Lacey…my BFF, Chantal Gillard (who is a little bit psychic), my other BFF, Lance Reynolds, who owns the Poker Face, the local tavern, but the most interesting person that you’ll meet is Nick Charles. He’s a tubby, opinionated tuxedo cat who just happens to be the lead detective in the Charles family (even though I’m the one with the PI license). Nick not only contributes to the solving of mysteries by spelling out clues with his favorite toy, Scrabble tiles, he’s saved my tail more than once, making him my official furry guardian angel!
Oh wow. Nick sounds AMAZING! Tell me about a defining moment in your life.
I think the most defining moment in my life thus far would be when I met Nick. He appeared on the doorstep of Hot Bread (my sandwich shop) one night and never left. From that moment on, we were partners! And I could not ask for a better one.
Why do you feel the need to put on your sleuthing hat and investigate murders?
Think about that old saying, “You can take the gal out of reporting, but you can’t take reporting out of the gal.” Reporting, like detective work (Samms prefers to call it ‘snooping’), runs in my blood. I always enjoyed getting to the bottom of things back when I was a reporter, even when it put me in danger. Solving mysteries now isn’t any different. I like the thrill of discovering a clue – any clue – that will lead me to a solution. I hate loose ends. And Nick is the same way. He hates loose ends too. I think the both of us will always want to put on our deerstalker hats and solve crimes!
