Helen Smith Three Sisters & Showstoppers Interview

Three Sisters and Showstoppers are two novella-length stories in the Emily Castles mystery series. The first full-length novel, Invitation to Die, will be published by Thomas & Mercer in October 2013.

The Emily Castles mystery series is set in present-day London. It features twenty-six-year-old Londoner Emily Castles and her neighbor, eccentric philosophy professor Dr. Muriel Crowther.

In Three Sisters, Emily goes to a party in a big house at the end of her street. She's sure she witnesses a murder, but no one will believe her. She teams up with Dr. Muriel to investigate.

In Showstoppers, Emily helps out at a local stage school run by her neighbor, Victoria. Soon she's mixed up in a blackmail plot and two deaths. Emily and Dr. Muriel team up to prevent further a massacre live on stage during the end of term show.

Today I get to welcome Helen Smith to Read Your Writes. Thanks for being here Helen. You are a person who seems to have her hands in everything from books to plays. Could you please tell us a little about yourself?

Kim, thanks for inviting me here. Yes, I have tried all sorts of writing. When I was a child I used to write dreadful poetry, and I still write it now occasionally. I have had most success with writing novels but, since having my first novel published, I have also written plays and screenplays. The plays have been produced on the fringe (i.e. in small theatres) in London and Scotland. I have sold some scripts to the BBC but had nothing produced yet. The books I have written have done really well. My first novel, Alison Wonderland, reached number one on Amazon’s Kindle bestseller lists in America, the UK and Germany. That success has made me think I really need to stick to novels for now. I enjoy writing them and readers seem to enjoy reading them.

Before you published your first novel, I read somewhere that you had many many different jobs. What was the strangest job you’ve had?

I had all sorts of different jobs. Mostly I worked as a temp in offices but when I was traveling around the world with my daughter, I took any work that I could get to help the money go further. I think the weirdest thing I did was dress up as a clown and sing Happy Birthday to a child as she got off the Star Ferry (the one that crosses the harbour) in Hong Kong.

Your current work includes two novella-length stories in the Emily Castles mystery series, Three Sisters and Showstoppers. Could you please tell us about Emily Castles? Who is she and what does she do? Or more importantly, how does she always manage to find herself in the middle of an investigation?

Emily is a twenty-six-year-old Londoner who is always between jobs—none of the jobs she tries is quite right, and though she’s a bright young woman (or perhaps because she’s a bright young woman), for some reason or other it never works out. It gives me lots of opportunities to put her in interesting situations where she can stumble across evil-doing! Emily is sweet-natured but she’s curious and she’s tenacious—and those qualities make her a very good amateur sleuth.

What can we expect next from you and when?

The first full-length novel in the series will be published by Thomas & Mercer later this year. It’s called Invitation to Die and it’s set at a conference of romance authors in Bloomsbury, London. Emily helps out at the conference and soon begins to investigate the murder of an American blogger who has been lured there to her death.

Thank you Helen for stopping by. It was great getting to know you a little better.

Kim, thanks for hosting me and asking such interesting questions. I have enjoyed visiting your blog.
