Review: Scorched by Laura Griffin

Kelsey Quinn set out to trace a murder victim. Now she may become one.

The dead don’t speak, but Kelsey knows their secrets.  As a forensic anthropologist at the Delphi Center crime lab, Kelsey makes it her mission to identify bodies using no more than shards of bone, and her find at a remote Philippines dig hints at a sinister story.  When Kelsey’s search for answers puts her at the scene of her ex-fiancé’s murder, only one man can help her.  The same man who broke her heart just months before, and who is also a prime suspect.  Faced with an ultimatum— Kelsey or his job—Gage Brewer did the only thing a Navy SEAL could . . . but that doesn’t mean he stopped wanting Kelsey.  Now Kelsey is running for her life and Gage is her last line of defense.  As the threats escalate, Kelsey realizes this conspiracy goes deeper and higher than they could have guessed.  With the clock ticking down on a madman’s plot, the slightest misstep will have unthinkable consequences. . . .

This is the first book by Laura Griffin I’ve read.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was not disappointed.  There were several twists and turns.  It was very intriguing to see how the author was able to weave a love story into a tale about domestic terrorism and deceit.  The characters were well written and the action moved along like a classic movie.  One of the things I like about this book is that while it is a part of a series, it stands alone.

The relationship between Gage Brewer and Kelsey Quinn is complicated.  He is a dedicated Navy Seal and she is a respected Forensic Anthropologist.  Although Gage ended their relationship, he is thrust back into Kelsey’s life after he is framed for murdering FBI Agent, Blake Reid, Kelsey’s ex-boyfriend.  Kelsey knows what really happened and has to go on the run to save her own life.

While on the run, it is discovered that the murder is just the tip of the iceberg.  Wheels are set into motion for an Anthrax attack and the FBI is involved on both sides.  In the midst of all of this, Gage and Kelsey have to confront the skeletons that still haunt them regarding their break-up and unresolved feelings for each other.

There is so much going on, you have to be sure to pay attention so you don’t miss anything.  Without giving anything away, I will say this book has everything that a fan of both Romance and Suspense could ask for.  The action keeps you on your toes while the romance lightens the mood.  I look forward to reading other novels by this author.
