Pool shark Jessie Hewitt usually knows where the balls will fall and how the game will end. But when a body lands on her couch, and the cute cop in her kitchen accuses her of murder, even Jessie isn't sure what will happen next. Playing With Poison is a cozy mystery with a lot of humor, a little romance, and far too much champagne.
Playing with Poison is the first Cozy Mystery that I have ever read. Compared to the Romantic Suspense books that I have been enjoying over the past few weeks, this was not as intriguing. It could be argued that my comparisons were unfair and I can respect that. Needless to say, this cozy mystery was just too Murder She Wrote for me.
Playing with Poison is the story of Historical Romance Writer Jessica Hewitt. She has the unfortunate luck of having her neighbor Candy Poppe’s fiance’, Stanley Sweetzer abruptly die on her couch. Turns out that he was poisoned. Of course, Jessica (Jessie) becomes the main suspect along with everyone else that lives in her building. While going through countless glasses of champagne, Jessie makes it her life’s work to find out whodunnit.
This book has an extensive cast of characters that include a police captain that appears to have a soft spot for Jessie along with all of the people that patronize the local bar across the street, The Stone Fountain which must be the books version of Cheers. I make this reference because everything about the book seemed to be right out of the 80s. It did have it’s comedic moments but I feel as if the book dragged on longer than necessary which may have diminished it’s realism. Regardless, I would still recommend for someone that likes their books lite and their characters shallow.
