Review ~ RULES OF PROTECTION by Alison Bliss

It’s rule breaker Emily Foster's birthday, and like everyone at The Jungle Room, she just wants to get some action. Unfortunately, she stumbles on the wrong kind, witnessing a mob hit. To protect her, she’s entered into the Witness Protection Program with by-the-book Special Agent Jake Ward as her chaperone.

When the location of their safe house is compromised, Jake stashes Emily deep in the Texas backwoods. The city-girl might be safe from the Mafia, but she has to contend with a psychotic rooster, a narcoleptic dog, crazy cowboys, and the danger of losing her heart to the one man she can’t have.

Jake's as hot as he is infuriating, and she can't help but push all his buttons to loosen him up. Their mutual, sizzling sexual attraction poses a dilemma: Jake’s determined to keep her safe and out of the wrong hands; she’s determined to get into the right ones—his.

REVIEW

Hilariously funny, frustrating, emotional with a little suspense; Rules of Protection from debut author Alison Bliss is a total hit.  Told in first person from the viewpoint of Emily Foster, it is truly a book to brighten your day.

Emily Foster is at The Jungle Room to celebrate her birthday with her best friends Gina and Dale.  Emily initially meets Jake when he rescues her from a douchebag trying to hit on her.  After a series of comical events, Emily witnesses a mob hit.  Once again, Jake comes to her rescue.  Unbeknownst to Emily, Jake is an undercover FBI agent.

Agent Jacob Ward is tasked with transporting Emily from Chicago to a safe house in Omaha.  When the safe house is compromised, Jake takes her to the only safe place he knows, his Aunt and Uncle’s farm in Liberty County, Texas. In order to not draw attention to themselves, Jake passes Emily off as his girlfriend.

Emily is a city girl with tons of emotional scars and baggage.  She says the first thing that pops into her head, she doesn’t know how to censor herself.  She tends to act before she thinks.  But she seriously has a good heart.  Jake is driven.  He’s driven to succeed at his job and he’s driven to atone for his past. Like Emily, he also has emotional scars, but unlike Emily, he has friends and family who have his back.

When these two are together, not only do tempers flair, but so does sparks of attraction.  In fact, no one gets under Jake’s skin more often and faster than Emily.  These two are total opposites of each other.  Jake is a rules guy and likes to blend in, stay low and not be seen.  Emily hates rules and likes to be noticed.

While I’m crazy about this book, I have to point out that at some point, Jake became my least favorite hero.  I mean I seriously wanted to do bodily harm to the guy.

Rules of Protection is definitely a book to put you in a good mood, with ALL of its funny moments.  But with so much humor, I was really surprised to see that when the moment came for things to get serious, the author left all the humor behind and actually got serious.  The secondary characters are some of the best except for one that I finally was okay with towards the end of the book.  This is the first book in the Tangled in Texas Series and I can not wait to see what else Alison has in store for us.
