In the new Vintage Kitchen Mystery from the author of No Mallets Intended, the Heritage Society is re-creating a perfect Victorian Christmas—until good tidings go bad...
Queensville has great expectations for their Dickens Days festival. A tourist-trade boom means a big turnout for the opening of Queensville Historic Manor and for Jaymie Leighton, food columnist and vintage cookware collector, a chance to promote the manor and give away homemade goodies. At the end of a long day of festival fun, Jaymie discovers the battered body of local woman Shelby Fretter.
Shelby predicted her own murder in journal entries—and all clues point to Cody Wainwright, the troubled son of Jaymie’s beleaguered newspaper editor. But considering the entire Fretter family had its share of dirty secrets, Jaymie’s not convinced by the case against Cody. With twists all over, she’s going to have to work like the Dickens to wrap up this investigation before Christmas—especially with the real killer ready to kill again.

Christmas at our House
From Jaymie Leighton of the Vintage Kitchen Mysteries
By: Victoria Hamilton
I know it’s too early for Christmas, but I guess it’s been on my mind a lot lately, what with getting the Queensville Historic Manor ready for visitors and thinking ahead to decorating the kitchen—my special area of the house—for Christmas.
And so I’ve been planning ahead for our family holidays. Every family has unique Christmas or seasonal holiday traditions, right? Well, when you have folks all over the place, it sometimes takes a lot of doing to get everything and everyone together!
My parents live in Boca Raton, Florida, but travel north every Christmas to spend it with me, my sister Becca and my dad’s mother, Grandma Leighton. I have the family house here in Queensville, Becca has a home in London, Ontario, Canada, and Grandma Leighton lives in London in a retirement residence. The logistics of being together require some thought and negotiation.
We’re still working it out. (Read White Colander Crime to see how it all comes together!) The important thing is being together.
But in the meantime I will certainly be spending time in Queensville at Dickens Days, our annual Christmas town festival. With all the Victorian storefronts, homes and cottages in town, it makes a perfect walk for tourists and townies alike. The Queensville Emporium, with its Victorian false front and big picture window, will sport cedar garlands, the little cottage shops along the main street will have Christmas lights and displays, and every pine tree will be lit up. Heritage society members will dress in Victorian garb and stroll, singing carols and songs of the season. We’ll hand out flyers about the heritage home and tasty treats.
And I’ll hang out with friends like Heidi and Joel, Valetta, and Bernie. I’ll work at the Emporium, as well as Jewel’s vintage store and Cynthia’s cool new cottage shop, all shabby chic and pink. I think it is at the holiday season more than any other that I appreciate Queensville in all its Victorian splendor.
But one of the best parts of the holidays for me is cooking and baking, finding yummy new recipes, enjoying other people’s experiments, and doing my best not to gain too many pounds from all the goodies! We’ll just see how that goes this year.
So… now that I’ve discussed Christmas too early, we can go back to enjoying fall and looking forward to Thanksgiving, first! And I will say, it’s a good thing I like turkey, because I celebrate both Canadian Thanksgiving in October, and our Thanksgiving, still to come.
Happy holidays everyone, no matter what or when you celebrate!

Hi Ellie.
DeleteYou soooo don't want to rush it. I know it kind of sucks that she gets all these awesome presents, but just wants to play with the boxes. The best is when she's old enough to wake the house up at 3 in the morning, to open Santa presents.
Love this series, I can't wait to read this book.
