HER CAPTAIN by Taryn Kincaid ~ Interview & Giveaway

Her Captain (Tempting Signs, #10)
by: Taryn Kincaid
Series: Tempting Signs
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: December 15, 2015
Publisher: Fated Desires Publishing

Capricorn Slate Claybourne, an ex-Seal and former sniper who has seen and done things in country that no man should endure, returns to his bucolic hometown on Pieberry  Island, desperate for the mundane, everyday routines he once wanted to escape.

A broken, soul-dead man unable to be around people, his body still a lethal weapon when his night terrors wake him from sleep, Slate’s failed to keep the promise he made to the commander who died in his arms: to look after the older man’s baby girl.

But animated Aries Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be, when she lands on the island to take over the decrepit Pieberry House, determined to turn it into an inn for summer tourists, and even more determined to yank Slate back into the land of the living.

First she crashes into him at the island’s holiday Winter Festival, dumping a towering stack of pies at his feet, then she drags him off to a fortune teller against his better judgment. Except for the sizzling attraction smoldering between them, they’re incompatible in every way.

But when a furious December nor’easter traps them together at Pieberry House, will Slate and Holly overcome their pasts and discover they are two halves of a whole?

Hi Taryn.  Welcome to Read Your Writes Book Reviews.  How are you?
Awesome! Thanks so much for having me in today! Happy to be here and so excited about the release of HER CAPTAIN!

Her Captain is part of the Tempting Signs series.  Can you tell me a little more about the series?
It’s a multi-author, limited book series from Fated Desires Publishing.  A new book by a different author for each of the 12 zodiac signs. Every book is totally stand alone, though. One or both of the main characters in each of the books has the sign for that month. HER CAPTAIN is the Capricorn book, the 10th in the series. The hero, Slate Claybourne, is a Capricorn like me! The heroine, Holly Harper, is an Aries. The combo is explosive!

Tell me about Her Captain and your characters of Slate Claybourne and Holly Harper.  I have to tell you what caught my attention was the fact the two are stranded alone in a house with a major snowstorm barreling down on them.
Slate is an ex-Navy SEAL, returning to his home on secluded Pieberry Island to regroup, after too many combat missions overseas. He is steadfast and reliable, and a touch damaged, suffering from PTSD. Holly is the bubbly, effervescent and utterly impetuous daughter of the commanding officer who died in his arms. She makes it her mission to bring out his more spontaneous side! Pieberry House is an old decrepit mansion on Pieberry Island, a summer touristy spot. Holly arrives determined to turn it into an inn. But like most things Holly undertakes, after her initial burst of energy and enthusiasm…so there they are, in a broke-down house with a questionable roof and no electricity…and outside a perfect storm rages. No snow, though. It’s more of an epic wind-and-rain Super Storm nor’easter, like Sandy was.

Was there anything about the book which surprised you?
Oh, yes!  I was shocked to find myself intrigued by the fortune-teller scene and the tools she uses to predict Slate and Holly’s future!  I loved writing both scenes, the one toward the beginning and the one at the end. Had to research crystals and such and it was so much fun!

I love fortune-tellers.  Your books cover several different genres from paranormal romance to contemporary romance to foodie contemporary romance.  What intrigues you the most about those genres?
I love paranormals because you can make up absolutely everything. Foodies, because they get all your juices flowing.  Contemporaries, because it’s such a challenge to write something that’s true to life, and yet, not-all-THAT-true to life, if you get my meaning. To me romance always has been something that must sweep you away, get you away from your everyday routine. You certainly don’t want to read about someone else’s everyday routine, do you?

That’s a perfect way to sum up of romance books.  What's your favorite part of a romance novel to write? (The beginning, the first meeting, first kiss, getting to know each other, first love scene, big fight, HEA or something else?)
The beginning, no question. (And then, of course, THE END!) I love the beginning because everything is fresh and new, bright and shiny and sparkly, full of hope and promise, like a very young child with mischief and wonder in her eyes.

Are you a full time writer or do you a day/night job which pays the bills?
Day job pays the bills. Writing is more of a labor of love. It barely keeps me in coffee!

Your labor of love seems to produce some really good sounding books. When and where do you write?
Usually the weekends for me. I’m pretty exhausted at night when I get home from the day job and tend to conk out on the couch while watching TV. I do most writing on the weekends, squeezing in all the other things I need to do, shopping, hairdresser, groceries, mani-pedi, dentist, cooking, bank, carwash, etc. etc.etc. in between. You will notice I did not say “cleaning.”

Cleaning is overrated.  What three words best describe you?
Bah. Hum. Bug.

O-kay.  So, you have officially left me speechless.
LOL! Would you like me to change it? It might get worse!

LOL.  No.  That’s okay.  I’ll just stick with the current answer.  What’s a perfect day for you?
A day I can wake up with bright sunlight streaming through the wind and a tropical breeze wafting over me…towel slung over the shoulder as I head to the deserted beach, Kindle in one hand, frozen daiquiri in the other. (Yeah, like THAT ever happens!)

It’s good to have a dream.  It's 10pm on a Friday night.  Where are you and what are you doing?
I am usually dancing on a bar top in Bourbon Street, New Orleans. (I also sell shares in the Brooklyn Bridge. Want one?)

LOL.  You should probably be careful.  I hear cops in New Orleans don’t really appreciate that sort of thing.  I think I have to pass on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Taryn, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with me and for making me laugh.  It has been a true pleasure.  Congratulations on the release of Her Captain.
Thanks so much for letting me visit!

“Do we have to play this idiotic game?”
“We do. And it’s not idiotic. You’d be surprised how telling astrology can be. Was I wrong about you?”
“Well…” He paused, and the silence between them lengthened.
“I’ll take that as a no.” She grinned at him.
“All right.” Again he said nothing more, and she wanted to shake him until a confession fell out of his mouth.
“Chatty, too.” She tapped her foot and crossed her arms over her chest, drawing his gaze to her breasts. But he still didn’t take the hint. She groaned. Such a man. “Eyes up, sailor.” She flicked a finger in the vicinity of his chin until he raised his focus. “Birthday?” she demanded again.
“In a couple of weeks,” he said at last, the admission apparently so difficult it might have been wrung from him on pain of torture.
She snapped her fingers. “Knew it. Do I have you sussed or not?” “Do you?”
“I mean, we’re completely incompatible. Like oil and water. The tortoise and the hare.”
He shot her another incendiary look, and then glanced at the exit as if contemplating how fast he could make his getaway.
“Oh, wait. So I ruffled your feathers a little, and you’re not going to help me now?”
Instead of replying, he seized her fiercely by the arm and spun her around, dragging her into him until he’d caught her up against his rock-hard chest. Then his mouth came down on hers, hard, harsh, and demanding. Giving absolutely no quarter. Shocking her into utter and complete silence.
Whoa! I thought this man lacked spontaneity? Holy simmering cinnamon buns!
