It’s where the perfect book tends to fly off the shelf and pick you...

Violet has every intention to hightail it back to Chicago, but then a dead man is discovered clutching a volume of Emily Dickinson’s poems from Grandma Daisy’s shop. The victim is Benedict Raisin, who recently put Grandma Daisy in his will, making her a prime suspect. REVIEW
Twelve years ago, Violet Waverly left Cascade Springs, New York and swore she would never return.  She would have stayed true to her word if her grandmother hadn’t called her pretending to be on her deathbed.  Rushing to Cascade Springs from Chicago, Violet not only discovers her grandmother isn’t knocking on death’s door but also has a couple of secrets: 1) Grandma Daisy’s bookstore Charming Books has a resident crow named Faulkner, 2) Grandma has a boyfriend Violet never knew about, 3) Charming Books is magical (the books within literally pick the person who is to read them), and 4) the women in the Waverly family have the ability to have the books speak to them.

Violet is all set to return to her life in Chicago when she discovers the body of Benedict Raisin, Grandma Daisy’s boyfriend, in the driveway of their house.  Daisy is the number one suspect according to the police, with the charge being lead by Benedict’s estranged daughter and an overzealous police officer.  Not wanting her grandmother to be railroaded, Violet stays in town and vows to catch the killer.

As Violet and the police investigate, the list of potential suspects starts to grow.  It seems Benedict wasn’t always the kind, upstanding man Violet thought he was.  Not only is Violet investigating the murder with the help of the books and Benedict’s cat Emerson (who may or may not be magical himself), she’s also dealing with the attention of three men, and a surprise job offer.  But she’s getting too close and her life gets put in jeopardy on more than one occasion.

Crime & Poetry is the first book in Amanda Flower’s Magical Bookshop Mystery series.  I have to say the series is off to a wonderful start.  The setting of a small quaint town is perfect.  The characters are all wonderful.  I like the potential of a romantic interest or two.  I’m hoping for a certain tall dark handsome man in uniform.  The mystery and misdirects are great.  I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
