5 Stars for MY ONE AND ONLY by Terri Osburn

My One and Only (Ardent Springs Series, #3)
by: Terri Osburn
Series: Ardent Springs
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: May 17, 2016
Source: Publisher ~ Montlake via NetGalley

As far as Dr. Haleigh Rae Mitchner is concerned, Cooper Ridgeway is more suited to a superhero cape than mechanic’s overalls. It’s just like Ardent Springs’s most upstanding resident to rescue a pregnant, homeless teenager and bring her to Haleigh’s delivery room. When they team up to help the new mother and baby, Haleigh is determined not to cross the line with Cooper. Not only is he her best friend’s brother, he’s a guy who deserves more than Haleigh’s checkered past could ever offer.

At first glance, Haleigh is no longer the girl Cooper pined for in school. The sleek, professional OB-GYN seems more out of reach than ever for this small-town mechanic. But the more time he spends with the complicated woman, the more he wants her. Who better than Cooper to prove to her that nothing is beyond fixing? Especially in Ardent Springs, a town that’s tailor-made for second chances.

REVIEW

My One and Only was probably one of the most refreshing books that I have read all year. It may have had the usual cliches such as the overbearing mother and the small town gossip but the one thing that it didn’t have was a hero with a checkered past still trying to slay his demons. No, in this book, the hero is a mechanic named Cooper Ridgeway who didn’t bend to his father’s will and decided to follow his own passion of working on cars. Cooper owns a successful auto repair shop and everyone in the small town of Ardent Springs, Tennessee knows that he is a good guy even if he wishes that he wasn’t sometimes. On the other hand, the heroine, OB/GYN Haleigh Mitchner is all sorts of screwed up thanks to her mother. Haleigh is a recovering alcoholic and she just moved back to town after ending her engagement to an up and coming plastic surgeon that her mother loves.

Cooper runs into Haleigh when he rushes a young stranger in labor to the town hospital where Haleigh works. The young girl, Jessi is in town to find the father she never knew so she and her newborn can have a family. Jessi ends up moving into the house of Cooper’s twin sister Abby who is also renting a room to Haleigh. Being the white knight that he is, Cooper decides to help Jessi find her father. In addition, Cooper also tries to show Haleigh that she deserves to be happy with a good man like him. Haleigh struggles with her past and present situation. She continues to try and appease her mom while demeaning herself. To make things more complicated, Abby doesn’t want Haleigh who just so happens to be her best friend since third grade, anywhere near Cooper. Abby knows Haleigh’s track record with men and alcohol so she refuses to let her brother get hurt or suffer the same abuse that she and Cooper suffered from their own alcoholic father.

Cooper is the best part of this book. He thinks that he isn’t good enough for Haleigh but he pursues her anyway. He has loved her most of his life and refuses to walk away. He doesn’t care about her flaws or her past. If I couldn’t see how good they were for each other, I would have wanted Cooper to give up. Oddly enough, they really were complementary to each other and very compatible between the sheets. Speaking of those sheets, they were on fire and some of the scenes were rather explicit and unexpected so be prepared for a cold shower. All in all, I was very impressed with this book.
