Review, Guest Post & Giveaway ~ FIXIN' TO DIE by Tonya Kappas

Fixin’ to Die (Kenni Lowry Mystery Series, #1)
by: Tonya Kappas
Series: Kenni Lowry Mystery
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Release Date: June 14, 2016
Publisher: Henery Press

Kenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in Cottonwood, Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but she quickly discovers the ghost of her grandfather, the town’s previous sheriff, has been scaring off any would-be criminals since she was elected. When the town’s most beloved doctor is found murdered on the very same day as a jewelry store robbery, and a mysterious symbol ties the crime scenes together, Kenni must satisfy her hankerin’ for justice by nabbing the culprits.
With the help of her Poppa, a lone deputy, and an annoyingly cute, too-big-for-his-britches State Reserve officer, Kenni must solve both cases and prove to the whole town, and herself, that she’s worth her salt before time runs out.

Do you believe in ghosts?
“My dead Poppa’s ghost is here and helping me solve crimes,” that is what Sheriff Kenni Lowry, my character in my new series, Kenni Lowry Mystery Series would say if you asked her. If you were to ask me, I’d say, “I’ve had my own ghostly encounter, but I have never seen a ghost.”

Recently, I have been asked if I have ever had any paranormal experience and no matter how crazy I sound, I would have to answer yes.
In fact, my own ghostly encounter is the inspiration behind all my paranormal mystery series, including my just released FIXIN’ TO DIE.
In the early 90’s I purchased a home that was a little over a hundred years old. That was when things started going bump in the night.
The electronics and water faucets would turn on around three a.m. and items like my hairdryer, clothing irons, and cameras began to disappear. When I would replace those items, the missing ones would show up in my kitchen cabinets, sitting right on top of my plates.
I’m not sure, but my encounter was put deep in my brain so when I did decide to write paranormal it was there to pull from.
In Fixin’ To Die, Sheriff Kenni Lowry has to figure out who killed the town’s beloved Doctor Walton and who broke in the White’s Jewelry store. You see, there hasn’t been crime in the small southern town of Cottonwood, Kentucky in the three years since Kenni was elected to office. Thanks to the help of her Ghost Poppa, ex-sheriff of Cottonwood, Kenni is on the right track.
I hope you find yourself giggling out loud while trying to figure out who killed Doc Walton.
Be sure to grab your copy of FIXIN’ TO DIE today, the first mystery in the Kenni Lowry Mystery Series. I’m so excited for this one!

Kenni Lowry has been the sheriff of Cottonwood, Kentucky for two years.  During this time crime has pretty much been nonexistent.  That all changes when one of the local doctors is found murdered in his home/office and the local jewelry store is broken into on the very same day.  With Kenni being the only police officer in town, Finn Vincent with the Kentucky State Reserve is called in to help and local jailer, Wyatt Granger is appointed as a temporary deputy.  The three set off to investigate the crimes.

In this small gossipy town, things are not going to be easy for Kenni as she has to investigate her own and be reminded that a woman shouldn’t be a Sheriff by her own mother nonetheless.  But Kenni gets help and encouragement from a very unlikely source, her deceased grandfather and former Sheriff, Elmer Sims. Through the gossip grapevine and good old-fashioned police work, the four slowly but surely start to put the pieces of the two crimes together.

I have to admit that it took me awhile to get into the story.  However, once I did, I didn’t want to put the book down.  Fixin’ to Die is full of over the top characters who will have you laughing and shaking your head.  There’s an attraction between Kenni and Finn that the whole town seems to notice.  Tonya Kappas has written a well-rounded mystery with enough clues to have you scratching your head, trying to put all the pieces together before the characters do.  I’m looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Kenni and the rest of Cottonwood next.

  3. Great post. Tonya my daughter's house she use to live in had a ghost or two. When I stayed with them when my hubby was out of town and was by myself and every time I wold go to the restroom I would come back to my medicine bottles being stacked one on top of the other. I would take them down and the next time I left the room and came back the would be stacked up again. That is just one of many things I experienced. Nice to know you draw on your own experience to write your paranormal books.

  14. I do believe! My house I grew up in had strange things happening. The door would come open on its own, the lights and stereo would would come on by themselves. Those things can be explained away as I became older but the one thing I can't explain is the rocking chair rocking by itself. I've also had a couple of unexplainable encounters.

  32. Tonya has such great ideas for books. This looks great--am very curious how Kenni is received as Sheriff in such a small town. Wonder what made Tonya make her the female lead, instead of a townsperson? You even allude to her mother not being sure if she's up to the job. Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  35. There is nothing that a southern girl loves more than having her daddy with her. I know with mine having died long-ago, I would be thrilled to have my daddy help me solve cases. Kenni sounds like an amazing character and this book sounds so amazing.
