I love friends to lovers romances. I mean really, who better to fall in love with and spend the rest of your life with than your best friend? In Juliette Hyland’s A Stolen Kiss with the Midwife, Quinn Davis and Milo Russell do just that. But their road to a happily-ever-after proves to be a bumpy one, paved with pitfalls.

Quinn and Milo have been best friends since grade school. They are opposites in almost every way possible. Milo comes from a tight, close-knit family, where he knew that he was loved. Quinn was adopted as an infant but then cast aside when her adoptive parents had a birth child. Her parents micromanaged her entire life and used “their love” as a way to control. As a result, Quinn is a free-spirit who isn’t big on plans. This character trait makes her career choice of being a traveling nurse-midwife so good. Milo, on the other hand is a planner and has to plan every aspect of his life. In fact, he has whiteboards with a fifteen-year plan.

After a decade spent as a traveling nurse-midwife, Quinn returns to California, where she is granted the opportunity to finally work with Milo, who is an obstetrician. The minute she walks into his arms at the airport, she feels something different for him. For the past eight months, she’s tried to hide the fact that her heart beats faster whenever he’s around. Milo secretly has been having feelings for Quinn as well. But “where Quinn needed freedom, he required control.” How do two best friends who are secretly in love with each other find common ground?

Milo and Quinn are definitely different. However, at the same time, they are so much alike. Their friendship means the world to them. And, they both love their jobs. They’re both kind and compassionate. My heart truly went out to both of them. These two irritated me a little bit with the fact that they kept their feelings to themselves for so long and were afraid to open up and risk getting hurt. They’re both afraid of the one character trait that has driven both their adult lives. Juliette did a really good job of laying out those particular character traits. She wrote the story in such a way that as a reader you could understand where each was coming from and why they felt their way was the right way. I understood Quinn and Milo on every level. I wish I could say I didn’t because that understanding breaks your heart just a little.

From beginning to end, both were easy to like. A Stolen Kiss with the Midwife flowed well. It’s a story about true friendship, love, and family. And the ending...the ending will definitely make your heart swell.
