Will this older woman—younger man romance give the town something to talk about?

He bailed on a wedding to the wrong woman,
only to fall right into temptation’s next trap.

Runaway groom Brett Harston has long been the subject of town gossip—and so has Sarabeth Edmonds, who’s returned to Royal after leaving her hateful ex-husband. Soon an innocent kiss to rile the rumor mill unleashes a red-hot attraction they can’t resist. Will the wealthy rancher fall hard—or will she be the one to run this time?

Have you ever picked up a book, started reading it, and immediately knew you were going to love it? That’s how I felt about At the Rancher’s Pleasure, written by Joss Wood. At the Rancher’s Pleasure is the second book in the Texas Cattleman’s Club: Heir Apparent series. The story picks up shortly after the first book in the series, Back in the Texan’s Bed by Naima Simone ends. If you missed that story, I definitely recommend that you read it. But don’t worry if you didn’t, because this is a standalone read.

At the Rancher’s Pleasure is an older woman/younger man romance. Thirty-eight-year-old Brett Harston is now known as “Royal’s Runaway Groom”, after breaking up with his fiancĂ©e Lexi Alderidge two weeks ago, a day before they were supposed to say “I do”. Sarabeth Edmonds has been bestowed the reputation of being a neglectful and uncaring mother, as well as Royal’s biggest gold digger. After nearly twenty years, she’s back in Royal, ready to finally set things right with her children Ross and Gina. She’s renting a cottage on Brett’s ranch but isn’t prepared for this cattle rancher and horse breeder to lasso her heart.

Joss has once again written this all-engrossing, page-turner of a story. Brett is what you expect from a cowboy hero. He’s a man of few words until necessary. He’s the epitome of the strong, silent type. He also has a hero complex, where he feels the need to rescue damsels in distress. At forty-eight, Sarabeth is a woman who has to come into her own through tough work and sacrifice. As a result, she’s a smart businesswoman who is strong and independent. She definitely does not need rescuing. I loved Brett and Sarabeth together. They see who the other really is. They are fun and passionate together. The best part is that they aren’t looking for love.

I wish we could have seen more of Sarabeth’s reunion with her kids. There wasn’t very much of them in the story. But I guess the story really was more about her returning to Royal after twenty years, showing her maturity, how she’s grown as a person, and the wisdom she’s gained. Plus, she’s finally able to confront her ex-husband, Rusty Edmonds, on even standing. There was an event I didn’t see coming. I can’t help but wonder how it’s going to affect the rest of the series if it does at all.

Joss Wood’s passion for putting black letters on a white screen is only matched by her love of books and traveling (especially to the wild places of Southern Africa) and, possibly, by her hatred of ironing and making school lunches.

She’s a wife, a mom to two teenagers and slave to two cats. After a career in local economic development, she now writes full time.
