She said no to a Prince - can she say no to a King?

Kathleen Kiski, a successful businesswoman in Toronto, Canada, is shocked to see her old boyfriend, Teddy Dubrienne, leading the news feed – catapulted onto the world stage when his entire family perishes in a suspicious explosion. Teddy isn't just any man—he's the third in line to the Ansulenian Throne. He was a Prince when they dated five years ago, offering her a chance to marry and be a Princess—she said no. Now he's about to become King.

Theo never planned to ascend to the throne, and not only has to deal with the devastating loss but also his mother's last request—to have Kathleen present at the funeral. In the depths of his sorrow, having Kat around would be the best medicine for his shattered heart and soul… but others are watching. Now Theo has to decide what's best for his kingdom, not necessarily for himself.

Kat doesn't see herself as worthy, not five years ago to be a Princess and definitely not now to be Queen. Except it may be just this reluctance that's needed to help a kingdom heal…

I’m not traditionally a reader of royal romances. I will go as far as to say I don’t like reading royal romances. That’s not to say I don’t follow real-life royals in the news. What had me reading Running from Royalty was its author, Sheryl Nantus. I am a huge fan of a couple of Sheryl’s paranormal and contemporary romance with suspense elements series. I wanted to see how she was with just a straight-up contemporary romance. What I got and what I wasn’t prepared for was a story where my heart broke and went out to a hero I didn’t even know. Almost immediately, Sheryl shows you through Teddy Dubrienne aka Prince Theo of Ansulenia’s eyes, the worst day of his life. She then allows you to get to know him through his flashbacks and that of his heroine, Kat Kiski.

The love story of Teddy and Kat began more than five years ago, when they met in Canada, while both attended college. At the time, Kat had no idea Teddy was a prince. As things progressed, she learned his true identity. When talk of their future came up, they reached an impasse, forcing an end to their relationship.

Fast forward five years, Teddy, who was third in line for the throne suddenly finds himself on the cusp of being crowned King after the death of his entire family. Teddy and Kat haven’t spoken to each other since they broke up, but that changes when Kat and her best friend Lily fly to Ansulenia to attend the funeral and coronation. While Teddy is shocked that Kat was still on the invite list, he’s glad that she shows up to support him in his time of need. In doing so, the two realize that they still have deep feelings for each other, but unfortunately nothing has changed with the way they see their futures.

Sheryl has written a really nice story. The main characters of Teddy, Kat, Lily, and Josef, Teddy’s bodyguard/assistant, are all great. They definitely each added to the story. I wasn’t expecting Sheryl to bring out so many emotions from me. There were several times where I found myself crying. The only thing I didn’t like or care for was the way the story ended. Kat and Teddy have a happy ending. It just wasn’t the ending I think their story or readers deserved.
