In Miel Moreland’s heartfelt young adult debut, It Goes Like This, four queer teens realize that sometimes you have to risk hitting repeat on heartbreak.

Eva, Celeste, Gina, and Steph used to think their friendship was unbreakable. After all, they’ve been though a lot together, including the astronomical rise of Moonlight Overthrow, the world-famous queer pop band they formed in middle school, never expecting to headline anything bigger than the county fair.

But after a sudden falling out leads to the dissolution of the teens’ band, their friendship, and Eva and Celeste’s starry-eyed romance, nothing is the same. Gina and Celeste step further into the spotlight, Steph disappears completely, and Eva, heartbroken, takes refuge as a songwriter and secret online fangirl…of her own band. That is, until a storm devastates their hometown, bringing the four ex-best-friends back together. As they prepare for one last show, they’ll discover whether growing up always means growing apart.

  • Start therapy. No, really. What you are feeling is both real and serious, and it’s worth the time.
  • Attend GSA meetings more regularly. I know you’re nervous and paranoid every time, but trust in the community. That feeling in your stomach, that it’s both scary and right? Trust that too. Trust it’s where you’re supposed to be.
  • Don’t let music go. Don’t forget there are usually albums attached to radio singles. Don’t wait until 2012 to discover the rest of Speak Now.
  • Wear a dress to school. It’s okay to change your style, and that doesn’t have to mean you’re changing you (unless you want it to). No one but you (… probably!) is tracking that you haven’t worn a dress to school since second grade. Internalized sexism is so 2002, and you don’t have gym class anymore.
  • Speaking of sexism, it’s great that you’re doing an unofficial independent study on feminism… but your non-fiction syllabus should include authors of color. You’re missing essential perspectives and insights.
  • Let your friends play with your hair! Better yet, let them teach you how to do your hair. Otherwise, you’ll end up trying to teach yourself how to French braid in grad school, and the results will not be pretty.
  • Learn how to cook one more meal before you leave for college. Maybe two.
  • Sunscreen is cool! I promise it’s going to become The Thing To Do really soon, so you might as well get a jumpstart.
  • Pack light... Lighter than that.
  • When you take your sweater off in public, please don’t leave it on the back of the chair/bench/elsewhere. Especially not that nice one from Nordstrom Rack. You’ll miss it.
