In the midst of the hurricane…
…will she find safety in his arms?
Vet Lucy Miller is happy with her quiet, ordered life. But when a tropical storm bears down on her Florida Keys animal sanctuary, the arrival of devastatingly gorgeous, yet equally guarded, emergency medic Jackson Durand brings disorder—and desire! He’s there to rescue her, but Lucy suspects her red-hot reaction to Jackson will be much more dangerous than the storm raging overhead…
The Vet’s Unexpected Hero is the first book in Traci Douglass’s First Response in Florida duet. The duet centers around the Durand brothers and the women brought into their lives by a hurricane.
Lucy Miller suffers from OCD and an anxiety disorder. She has been told that she can't take care of herself pretty much her entire life and that she doesn't know what's good for her. When she finally gains her freedom, she swears to never be reliant on anyone again or allow anyone to tell her what’s good for her. To prove she’s capable, she leaves her family in Charleston, earns her veterinary degree, and moves to the Florida Keys where she purchases an animal sanctuary.
Jackson Durand is an EMT. He and his old brother Luis are both adopted. Jackson has never felt he was worthy of love, since being abandoned by his birth mother when he was four years old. He has a burning desire to help and protect others but prefers to keep anyone who isn’t his brother or adoptive parents at arm’s length.
Tropical Storm Mathilda poses a threat to the Keys and both Jackson and Lucy are part of the local emergency response team. When Lucy wanders into the ER asking for directions to the meeting room, Jackson can’t help but be intrigued by the woman who refuses to step on cracks and has to have her colored pens in a certain order. When Mathilda becomes a hurricane and Lucy refuses to leave her sanctuary, Jackson goes to her expecting to force her to get to higher safer ground. Not liking being told what to do, Lucy still refuses and is unaware that Mathilda is planning on making a direct hit on her beloved sanctuary. This forces her and Jackson to ride out the storm together in her basement.
The Vet’s Unexpected Hero marked my first time reading a story about a hero or heroine having OCD and/or anxiety issues. I couldn't help but spend the whole book wondering if this was what it was like for a person with the disorders. I loved that Traci made Lucy different from other romance heroines.
Unfortunately, this wasn't my favorite book from Traci. I didn't have a connection with the characters that I usually do with her stories. With that said, I can see why Traci paired Jackson and Lucy together. Lucy is independent and so focused on her conditions and making sure she completes her tasks that she doesn’t fall for Jackson’s charms. Jackson understands Lucy because of his experience with his brother. He also accepts her for who she is and doesn’t want to change her.
Her One-Night Secret is the next book. It features Jackson’s brother Luis and Lucy’s best friend Stacy Williams. These two have a history no one knows about. The story takes place alongside The Vet’s Unexpected Hero.
