In Juliette Hyland’s latest Harlequin Medical Romance, risking your heart is always a daunting task, but it’s almost always worth it, especially when romance comes knocking on your front door…

Her new colleague……is also her new roommate! Widowed workaholic Kit has dedicated her life to her patients. She’s determined to be the best vet in town and prove herself to those who’ve doubted her. But when Dr. August—aka her boss’s prodigal son—returns to help at the clinic, she’s faced with an unexpected and irresistible houseguest! August is a distraction Kit doesn’t need. Although he’s certainly one she wants! Can Kit take a risk on a rebel?

From Harlequin Medical: Life and love in the world of modern medicine.

The Vet’s Unexpected Houseguest is the story of two vets who find love and acceptance in each other, against the odds.

August Rhodes is the only child of Jeff Rhodes. Their relationship has always been strained. Jeff dedicated his life and love to animals and his vet practice, Rhodes Animal Services. His dedication cost him his wife and marriage as he chose to never put her or August first. Left to raise August on his own, Jeff looked at him more as a burden or responsibility than as a son. August is a combination of both of his parents. He loves animals just like his father, but he shares his wanderlust with his mother. As a result, August loves to seek adventure and is now a traveling/relief vet, traveling the country but never staying in one place for more than a few months.

Kit Bedrick shares August and Jeff’s love for animals. After being kicked out of the vet clinic she co-founded, Kit now works for Jeff, with the hope of one day being able to buy him out and own the clinic outright. She also rents the small cottage he owns located behind the clinic.

When a car accident results in Jeff being unable to work, August returns home to Foxfield, Tennessee to help out at the clinic. Unable to stay with his father, August is instructed to stay in the extra bedroom at the cottage. Strangely, Kit’s rental agreement with Jeff allows him to use her place for any guests he wants. Over the course of a few weeks, Kit and August become friends and settle into a nice routine. They ultimately develop feelings for each other. But their life goals and other differences threaten to derail any future they have.

The Vet’s Unexpected Houseguest wasn’t one of my favorite books from Juliette Hyland. As a pet lover, I found the story to be sad. I also didn't really make a connection with the characters.

She lives in Ohio, USA, with her prince charming, who has patiently listened to many rants regarding characters failing to follow the outline. When not working on fun and flirty happily ever afters, Juliette can be found spending time with her beautiful daughters, giant dogs or sewing uneven stitches with her sewing machine.
