Mini Meadows, a Tiny Home community in rural Central Florida, is home to Emma Wells, a downsize specialist who left her daddy’s mansion and her inheritance behind in favor of a simpler, more peaceful life in a tiny home that was once two shipping containers. But when she opens a shipping container and discovers her dead client sitting in a rocking chair, neatly wrapped and labeled, and two of her friends end up on the suspect list, Emma pitches in to help find the killer. With plenty of clues to unpack, Emma narrows down the suspect list, but as she begins to close in on the culprit, she realizes if she’s not careful she could end up in a box of her own.

While researching tiny homes for No Small Murder, I started wondering what it would be like to live in a home made from shipping containers or a caboose. What would it be like with so little space? What are the drawbacks? What are the advantages?
Well, for my family, there’s no way it would work. There are six of us and four dogs, three of which are fairly large, two around a hundred pounds (like Butch in No Small Murder). But if I lived alone, I think I would like tiny home living. It seems like it would be cozy and comfortable, your own little space without too much maintenance involved. Of course, I don’t know where I’d put all of my books.
Then I started to think about built in shelves and cubbies that would make tiny home living easier and found some wonderful ideas that would work in full-size houses as well; benches that open for storage, multi-purpose furniture, hidden nooks and crannies.
While it would be nice to have a tiny home on the beach or in the forest, I think I would get lonely (and a little spooked) living such an isolated life. With that in mind, I created Mini-Meadows, a community of tiny homes in Central Florida where tiny businesses, like Pocket Books (Chloe’s book store) and Little Bits (Jade’s consignment shop) line Main Street and residents meet up at the tiny diner for good food and gossip.
What do you think? Would you enjoy tiny home living? If so, what kind of home would you like? Where would you like it to be located?
Lena Gregory grew up in a small town on the south shore of eastern Long Island, but she recently traded in cold, damp, gray winters for the warmth and sunshine of Central Florida, where she now lives with her husband, three kids, son-in-law, and four dogs. Her hobbies include spending time with family, reading, and walking. Her love for writing developed when her youngest son was born and didn’t sleep through the night. She works full-time as a writer and a freelance editor and is a member of Sisters in Crime.

ReplyDeleteThink it would be cool to have a tiny house. We greatly downsized when we moved to our dream destination and we don't miss anything we disposed of one way or the other. Now 6 years later, I think I could definitely do it again - downsizing to a tiny home. For one thing there would be less to maintain. :) Plus the older you get the less you realize that you need. As long as it could be all on one floor - no stairs or ladders for me. Love the caboose one!
