A STORM IS BREWING…

Remy Boudreaux has kept his distance from women ever since his partner and girlfriend was killed on the job. From his point of view, you can’t be hurt if you never let anyone get close.

But when a mysterious wolf pendant ropes them both into danger, Remy may have to reveal his true self...and hope Triana accepts him just as he is.

Creating the werewolves of the Special Wolf Alpha Team series.

When my husband and I (we write as a team) first started coming up with the idea for my Special Wolf Alpha Team (SWAT) Series, we knew we needed to approach the werewolf mythology in a completely new way. We wanted our cops to be able to function as a viable police force and to be able to use their werewolf abilities to help them do their job. We couldn’t do that if we went with the traditional idea of a werewolf, one that loses control and turns into a raving beast every time the moon is full. We also didn’t want to have to worry about werewolves getting created every time one of our SWAT had to bite some bad guy, because we knew that was going to happen. Why have alpha werewolf cops if they can’t bite people occasionally?

Besides, that kind of werewolf has been done a thousand times. Why do it again?

So we decided to go in a completely different direction. Our werewolves are born as werewolves instead of being turned from a bite. Of course, it couldn’t be as simple as someone growing up in a werewolf family, though. What fun would that be?

Instead, in our world, certain people are born with a gene that predisposes them to becoming a werewolf. This gene—which is normally dormant—can turn a person into a werewolf if—and only if—that person goes through an extremely traumatic, adrenaline-inducing event.

As a writer, I love this approach because the traumatic event that turns a person into a werewolf is a character-defining gold mine with thrills, suspense, pain, and love.

This approach also allows our werewolves to come out of the process slightly different, depending on the particular situation. A heroic person going through a traumatic event is going to come out as a big, strong alpha werewolf. A less heroic person who simply gets caught up in a bad situation might come out as a smaller beta werewolf. Lastly, a bad guy going through the same situation might come out as a loner, nearly out-of-control omega werewolf. The best part is that you can mix and match all types, which is more character-development gold.
