Turning Point by Tiffany Snow

After her promotion from law firm Runner to Investigator, Kathleen Turner is learning the ropes of her new job from none other than assassin-for-hire Kade Dennon, a situation her boyfriend Blane Kirk is none too happy about.  But the lessons with Kathleen take a backseat when Kade becomes a target.  Previously untouchable, his enemies now know of the chink in his armor – his brother’s girlfriend.

And Kade’s not the only thing coming between Kathleen and Blane.  From Blane’s inexplicable defense of a man guilty of a horrible crime, to a mysterious stranger from Kathleen’s past, to Kathleen’ risky investigation into human traffickers, the obstacles mount against a relationship that’s just begun to find trust again.

While Blane considers a job offer that would take him back to the front lines in the war on terror, Kathleen is determined to pursue her new career, with or without his approval.  Unfortunately, her current case is far more dangerous than anyone knows.  Someone close to Blane will go to extreme lengths to split them up, lengths that may prove worse than death for Kathleen.

Kathleen, Blane and Kade must atone for the sins of the past and the present.  The fallout will force Kathleen to a turning point…in her career, and her life.

I went into reading Turning Point behind the curve ball so to speak.  Turning Point is the third book in the Kathleen Turner Series.  However, it's the first book I've read.  I have to admit that I had a hard time in the beginning with the book; simply because there were references to events that happened in the first two books.  I found myself confused and not really liking the book at all.  I was sure that if I would have read the first two books, I would have liked this book immediately.

I really wanted to read this book, so I did what I usually do as a reader when I don't understand something, I sent the author an email and asked some questions.  Ahhhh..  Things started to make sense.  Tiffany didn't go into great detail telling me everything that happened in the books.  She merely gave me the character background information I asked for.  If you've already read the other two books, please bare with me as I catch everyone else up to speed.

As I suspected, Blane and Kade are half brothers with different mothers.  Blane grew up with wealth and privilege, while Kade grew up in foster care being abused.  Blane and Kade truly care for each other.  In fact, they have stated on more than one occasion that the other is the only person they would risk their life for.  You can tell that they will always have the other's back.  Blane is a former Navy SEAL and partner in the law firm Kathleen works for, Kirk and Trent.  He also has political aspirations and a Senator as an uncle backing him up.  Kade is a former FBI agent and current gun-for-hire.  Kade is very good at what he does and has made plenty of enemies.  The brothers tend to work with each other on difficult cases.  Kathleen, Blane and Kade have very interesting relationships with each other.  Kathleen is in love with Blane, but she isn’t sure how he truly feels about her.  Blane cares for Kathleen and would do anything to protect her.  Kathleen and Kade each have feelings for the other, going beyond simple friendship.  It seems to be just a matter of time before they end up together.

Now, back to the regularly scheduled review....

WOW!!!!  The book description really does sum up the book.  Turning Point has so many twists and turns.  There are multiple plots going on within this book.  In the beginning you have Kade and Kathleen doing some follow up on a lead from events taking place in the second book.  You then have Blane representing someone he knows is guilty of a horrible crime.  And these are just the tip of the iceberg.  With Turning Point, you get everything from blackmail, assault, kidnapping, corruption, attempted-murder to murder.  You don’t know who you can trust and who you can't.  Everyone has their own agenda and everyone, including Kathleen, has secrets.

Once I got into this book, I did not want to put it down.  I got a lot more than I bargained for.  While it seems Blane and Kade talk to each other somewhat consistently, they keep things to themselves and don't share information with Kathleen.  While Blane and Kade have an understanding that they’re family and will be there for the other, there’s also this underlying jealousy the two have for each other.  They are each jealous of the relationship Kathleen has with the other.  From the beginning I was a fan of Kade, the same could not be said for Blane.  Kade tends to always show up when Kathleen needs him.  Not to say Blane isn’t there as well, because he is.  I just feel there’s so much more going on with Blane and what little I’ve learned about him is only half of the picture.

Kathleen doesn’t listen to anyone.  It’s as if she likes to put herself in danger.  I can NOT believe all the crap that happens to Kathleen.  I mean really.  You would think at some point she would just say enough is enough.  She just keeps going back for more.  While there are times I don’t like Kathleen or her actions, I respect her desire to always be willing to help, even if it means risking her own life.  I will say that in the end my heart broke for her.

Since there are so many twists and turns going on in this book, not everything gets resolved.  The ending is unfreaking believeable and has me dying to read the next book in the series.

Books in the Kathleen Turner Series
4.  Out of Turn (Available December 17, 2013)

Thank you to Kim for hosting me on the blog tour for TURNING POINT, the third book in The Kathleen Turner Series. There will be a total of five books in the series. Book four, OUT OF TURN, will be released on 12/17/13.
What was your inspiration for writing the first Kathleen Turner book?

My inspiration for No Turning Back (book one in the series) began when I knew I wanted to write a series that contained the same characters so I could stay with them for several books. That’s one of my favorite things to read myself so naturally, that’s what I wanted to write. Kathleen is an homage to one of my favorite heroines of all time – Nancy Drew. I grew up reading about Nancy and her adventures so Kathleen and her strawberry-blonde hair is a nod and wink to Nancy. A cornerstone of this series is the love triangle, which is one of my favorite romantic elements and I was very excited to write my own. In No Turning Back, we’re introduced to Blane Kirk, the hero, in a much fuller extent than Kade Dennon, the anti-hero, who is explored more fully in Turn to Me, book two in the series. The plot in No Turning Back revolves around an online election that has been hacked. With my background in Information Technology, I thought it would be interesting to bring that aspect into the plot in a current way.

Describe Kathleen Turner. Who is she and what makes her tick?

Kathleen Turner is 24 years old when we first meet her. She’s rather alone in the world – her mother died from cancer three years ago and her father was a police officer killed in the line of duty. She moves from a small town in Indiana to Indianapolis and takes a position as a runner at a law firm. Kathleen is someone I hope everyone could relate to, whether they see themselves in her, or if she could be their friend, sister, neighbor, daughter. She’s sweet, loyal, kind, trusting, pretty and sometimes too naïve for her own good. Kathleen has a strong sense of right and wrong, combined with her character trait of loyalty, she sometimes doesn’t always make decisions best for her ongoing health. But she tries to make what she feels is the right decision, regardless of the toll it may take on her.

What challenges do you face in keeping your series going? And is there a magic number the amount of books which will make up The Kathleen Turner Series?

The challenge is always writing the characters in a believable way. I don’t want the sometimes horrifying events that happen to them to not leave a mark –that’s just not how people work. People grow and change and so do my characters, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. They fall in love, they fall into danger, they learn who and who not to trust, they learn what they want from life. I wanted to encapsulate Kathleen, Blane and Kade’s story in a way that was true to the characters, so I decided at the outset that a set number of books would suffice for that and make crafting their journey the easiest. Thus there will be five books in the series.

What type of scenes are your most favorite to write and why?

Since I write a love triangle, my favorite scenes are when all three of my main characters are together – Kathleen, Blane and Kade. Blane and Kade are half-brothers but are on opposite sides of the law. A history between the two of them means they have a strong bond of love and loyalty. The fact that they both fall for the same woman puts that relationship to the test. I love to explore that, and of course since the books are told in first-person, we only see Blane and Kade together when Kathleen is present, too, which adds a whole other dynamic.

When you want to lose yourself in a book, where is your favorite place to read?

I like to be alone when I read, so if it’s winter, I like to curl up in my bedroom next to the fireplace. If it’s a nice, cool Autumn day, I love to sit on the patio with a blanket to read. But the truth is, I could be sitting in the waiting room at the orthodontist and be lost in a book. (smile)
