“Maybe we should catch up sometime?” she said, before Devon could broach it. “Grab a coffee, or something?”
“That would be…” He swallowed past the lump in his throat. “Great!”
“You can tell me what you’re working on, and I’ll fill you in on my life in Italy!” Joy’s eyes sparkled merrily, and Devon wondered if he’d made a tactical error. He’d thought he was over Joy. Way over his feelings for her. Now, he found himself starting to wonder how true that was.
“When and where?”
“I’m watching Xavier for my folks in the morning. Gloria’s working on a production at the children’s theater, and Dad’s helping Olivia and Nick with some stuff at Sleigh Bell Stables.” Joy’s smile brightened. “But, I’m free in the afternoon!”
“Want to say three, then?”
“Three sounds good.”
Devon’s gaze darted across the road. “Jolly Bean Java?”
“Er…” She hedged and Devon got why. He and Joy had hung out together at Jolly Bean Java all the time as a teenage couple. Maybe another spot would prove better for reconnecting. On a purely platonic level. Which this was. Platonic. Purely. Even though, now that he’d remembered it, Devon was finding it hard to forget about his and Joy’s first kiss. Joy’s lips had been soft, wonderful, and warm—as she’d wound her arms around him. “How about the café at the Elf Shelf Bookshop? I hear their scones are really good.”
“I love scones,” Devon said, his tone unintentionally husky.
Joy gave him a bemused smile. “Yeah. Me, too.”
